Four Damaging Mistakes Guitar Teachers Make In Their Guitar Lesson Ads

by Tom Hess music

Are you struggling from getting new students from the guitar lesson ads you display? Well, you are not the sole one. This is a common issue most guitar teachers deal with. They think their ads aren't reaching enough people but in reality is that their actual ads aren’t so effective.

What follows are the most common mistakes made by guitar teachers when creating their guitar lesson ads and how you can prevent them and start getting brand new guitar students:

Mistake #1: Saying How Much Your Lessons Cost Right In The Ad

Most guitar lesson ads show the lesson price. This prevents you from getting new students, and here is why:
A. Almost all guitar students don’t really understand how to differentiate one guitar teacher from another. They guess (incorrectly) that all teachers are basically the same and that the one who is more affordable will be ideal for them (and their money).

These students’ assumptions hurt you. With this approach, the only way to win is by being the least expensive guitar teacher in your local area... causing you to end up working much harder while making less money. This also hurts your guitar students, since in the process of seeking an inexpensive guitar teacher, they are likely to end up with a low quality guitar teacher.

B. Guitar students who seek “affordable” guitar lessons are the ones who are not committed and serious enough to learn guitar, are not likely to stay longer with you and do not have a lot of money to spend in guitar lessons. On the contrary, the exemplary and ideal guitar students (those who are committed and serious about learning to play guitar, who want to study only with the best guitar teacher and also have lots of money to spend on guitar lessons) understand that affordable guitar lessons are equivalent to low quality education. They will NEVER select you as a teacher if they see your prices are low.

As a result, students lose and you lose “twice”, by failing to attract the ideal guitar students and making way less money. Take a look at this great article and discover the reasons why guitar teachers can’t earn a lot of money and how you can earn a lot of money teaching guitar.

Quick fix: Reveal The Cost Of NOT Taking Guitar Lessons

Forget about revealing the pricing of your lessons in the ad, instead, help potential students see the real cost of not taking guitar lessons with a guitar teacher that understands them and can help solve their musical frustrations. This will help a lot on getting more brand new guitar students and have them taking guitar lessons with you.

Mistake #2: Failing To Communicate To Potential Students How They Will Profit From Taking Guitar Lessons With YOU

Most guitar teachers fall into the trap of listing too many details when it comes to what they teach in their lessons. They talk about specific musical concepts and guitar techniques. Never do this if you want to get new guitar students. This is the reason why:

Truth is, potential students do not come to you to learn new musical concepts or guitar techniques... many of them wouldn’t understand what your technical language means and how this would help them to become better at guitar. What they actually want is to solve their musical frustrations and to feel great when playing guitar. Talking about a bunch of random topics won’t meet their needs and most people will assume you aren’t the right teacher for them.

Quick fix: Stop Selling “Guitar Lessons” In Your Ads - Sell “Fixing Guitar Playing Problems”

To create effective guitar lesson ads, you need to acquire a deep understanding of what exactly guitar students look for in guitar lessons. Hint: beginner students tends to have a totally different reason for seeking guitar lessons than advanced students have. Teenagers and children have different needs and goals than adult guitar students. Identify the type of students you are trying to attract and talk to the heart of their desires, goals and challenges.

Mistake #3: Lacking A Clear Understanding Of Who You Are Creating Your Guitar Lesson Ads For

Most guitar teachers try to promote their lessons to as many different people as possible, attempting to attract a diverse groups of guitar students. They think that trying to attract all types (beginners, advanced and intermediate guitar students) will be more efficient for getting more students to take guitar lessons. In reality, you get the attention of potential students only when you become more specific in your ad. Students who are committed to learning guitar only want to take lessons with a specialist.

For instance, when you suffer from a toothache, do you go to see a general doctor at the clinic or a dentist? I don’t even have to answer this question, right? Well, this is the way your potential students think about taking lessons from a specialist vs a “general” guitar teacher.

Quick fix: Design Your Guitar Lesson Ads For Unique Groups Of Guitar Students Only

You can make this even more efficient by designing several different ads focusing on unique groups of guitar students. This will help you get a lot more new guitar students.

Mistake #4: Focusing Too Much On You (Your Guitar Teaching Experience And Background)

Guitar teachers talk too much about themselves when writing their guitar lesson ads. This hurts your ad’s efficiency for two reasons: First, all other guitar lesson ads are written in the exact same way. Take a look around and notice how many guitar teachers are talking about all these irrelevant things (their location, teaching experience, music career background, etc.). Making your ads the same as everyone else gives no reason for people to contact you instead of contacting another teacher... and you lose students.

Second, people who want to learn to play guitar do not care about you or me or anyone else. They only want to learn to play guitar the way they want to play. Your background or any type of credential won’t make them excited about studying guitar with you.

Quick fix: Center Your Guitar Lesson Ads On What Your Students Really Want

Write your guitar lesson ads so that people who read them feel like you relate to them, and that you understand exactly what their frustration and challenges are.

Build a list of common problems most guitar students deal with and discuss them in your lesson ads. Write about explicit problems that you are going to fix and/or specific target you are going to lead them to reach. In doing so, guitar players who read your ad will feelthat you are the one who truly understands them and will be more likely to contact you.

Warning: Never write things that aren’t true or things that you can’t do. You have to be able to support your claims with real ability to teach and proof. If you don’t feel confident in your guitar teaching skills, enroll in this guitar teaching program and start becoming a better guitar teacher.
