Forged or Cast Irons: Know which Ones are Right for you

by Hubert Maass Golf Components & Custom Clubs Provider

It is important to understand the difference between forged and cast irons. More often, customers ask what the basic difference between the two is and which is suitable for them accordingly. The more crisp answer to this would be that every golfer has different capabilities so it differs from person to person. Let us further look into some facts about golf club iron sets so as to assess which ones suit you the most.

  • Design and Production

Production of both types of irons is important to find out what might suit your level of experience and skill in the game. As for forged irons, these are created from a solid metal piece and beaten into the needed shape and inclination. Forged irons cost a bit more because they are labour intensive products.

On the other hand, cast irons are created from molten metal and then given shape. The majority of golfs are made by the process of casting. Most manufacturers use 17-4 stainless steel that is 17% chromium and 4% nickel. These clubs are mostly used by scratch golfers.

  • Busting the Myths

There is a perception that forged clubs can be used by only better players. If you are just about to start playing as a beginner, there is no need to think about forged or cast iron. What you can think about is the weight characteristic that can best suit the forgiveness along with the workability that your game requires.

Another myth is that forged clubs “feel” softer. It is only the shape of the club that may impart such feeling. This is because forged clubs offer a small cavity design which results in placing more weight behind the golf ball.

  • Technicalities

If we move on to the technicalities of these clubs, cast irons are built with 431 stainless steel which amounts to 25% softer than the 17-4 stainless steel.

The forged irons have continued to be available at sizes smaller than the cast iron clubs and more of their weight made to fall directly behind the ball. These are made of softer steels and comprise of features such as less hosel offset and thinner top lines which were favoured by the pros and as for amateurs, they liked it’s classy feel and ability to shape shots. Hence the cost differed. Forged irons are expensive than cast irons.

It is highly recommended that you go for custom golf irons, made out of either cast or forged irons to best suit your playing ability and with detailed specifications of your game requirements.
