Features of laminate and hardwood flooring

by Hardwood Design Centre Flooring

Hardwood flooring uses strong thick boards of durable woods like oak, maple, and hickory. Hardwood flooring can last for an extended period if it is adequately maintained. Lowes laminate flooring is done by synthetic fiberboards, which have a laminate finishing. It is much cheaper than hardwood flooring, but laminate flooring will not last for a long time as it is not made of natural wood. However, this does not mean that you should ignore laminate flooring as this flooring is resistant to scratches, stains, moisture, and general wear and tear.

Here are some differences which can help you to choose the better flooring :

Durability –

Hardwood flooring is usually known as a natural wood deal. As its name suggests, it lasts for an extended period. The durability of such floors depends on which type of wood is used, whether the floor is finished, in which room the flooring is done, and how well it is protected. Well-maintained and refinished hardwood floors always last for decades.

On the other hand, if we talk about laminate flooring, it is less durable than hardwood floors. But good quality laminate floors are less prone to several issues than plague hardwood. Most species of laminate flooring needs to be replaced after ten to fifteen years. Whereas lower quality laminate flooring needs to be replaced sooner

Cost –

Generally more unique in quality, the hardwood will cost more. Including labor charges for installation, most of the hardwood floors range from $8 to $12 per square foot. But, like its price, it is also durable in quality.

While laminate flooring cost ranges are from $3 to $10 per square foot, including labor charges for installation.

Installation –

Hardwood flooring is tough to do. Small mistakes could be frustrating as well, leading to more expenses. Nowadays, most wood flooring is pre-cut, making installing grooves and tongue planks easy.

Laminate flooring is done by installing floating tongue and groove locking, gluing down over concrete, cork, wood, or foam pad.

Moisture resistance –

Hardwood flooring is prone to moisture discoloration, penetration, or warping. However, engineered wood is slightly more resistant to water than other species.

Laminate flooring cannot resist moisture penetration, but some laminate species are less water-resistant.

Composition –

Hardwood floors have many varieties of different sizes. This type of floor is manufactured from natural woods, which gives it natural grains and tones. Its varieties range from light browns to neutral grey and rich reddish bronzes. Oak and maple are the most common species of hardwood used.

Laminate flooring is usually done by a synthetic fibreboard that comprises four layers – a stabilizing later, a photographic pattern layer, a layer of high-density fibreboard, and a transparent melamine polish layer. The most commonly used laminate flooring is grey laminate flooring.

Resale value –

The resale value of Hardwood floors is excellent as you can get a pretty much higher price.

The resale value of laminate flooring is good to fair.

Waterproof –

Hardwood floors are not waterproof. Laminate floors can be easily cleaned up but cannot withstand standing water.
