Exploring the Hidden Marvels of Mumbai

We all know Mumbai as the ‘City of Dreams’ and ‘The City That Never Sleeps’.  While these names given to the city are true and there are thousands of tourists that visit this mind blowing city on a daily basis, there are still a few places that are unnoticed by the tourists as well as the locals. Lost in the crowd of the city, there are quite a few of these lesser known marvels. If you are someone who wants to know about these places, here we list down the hidden treasures of Mumbai that are sure to surprise you. Don’t forget to add them to your bucket list when you visit the city next.
 
1- Gillbert Hill: Gillbert hill is a mesmerizing rock formation that is still unknown to many. If we go by the facts, there are just two known parallels of this in the entire world. This rock formation is basically a basalt monolith column which was made around 65 million years ago from frozen molten lava. It is around 200 feet high and thus offers stunning views of the city. If you want a peaceful retreat in the populous city, just climb up this fascinating ancient structure and soak in 360 degree views of the city. On reaching the top, you’ll find two temples, one dedicated to Durga Mata and other to Gaondevi.

2- Jogeshwari Caves: If you have interest in art, history and architecture, this is a not-to-miss hidden treasure in Mumbai. Jogeshwari caves are one of the oldest and the largest cave temples in the city. Built around 1500 years ago, they are a perfect example of the Mahayana Buddhist architecture. As you’ll explore these caves, you’ll see beautiful carvings and sculptures on the wall and the pillars. You’ll find idols of Ganesh, Dattatreya and Hanuman. These caves are in close proximity to the airport, so if you have booked your stay at a hotel near Mumbai Domestic Airport, do make a visit to this hidden gem.

3- Flamingo Viewpoint (Sewri): Many of you won’t believe if we tell that you can find Flamingos in Mumbai. Well, if you visit Mumbai between November and March, you can see thousands of flamingos in Sewri in South Mumbai. They come here during these months in search of food. Do visit this place, view these beautiful migratory birds and click their pictures. While clicking pictures, make sure you are at a safe distance from these pink feathered birds. You can also see them with the help of binoculars.
