Everything You Want To Know About Cannabutter

by Info Puffland Consultant

Do you love baking? Are you a cannabis user? The chances that you might have, at least, heard about cannabutter once. Mostly called cannabutter, sometimes canna-butter or weed butter, this is a key ingredient to any cannabis edibles, whether you buy or bake them. Familiar or not with this butter, the chances are, you don't really know everything you should about it. That’s why I wanted to give an answer to all the questions you may have about cannabutter in the following article!

What is cannabutter?

What is the difference between a brownie and a pot brownie? One is using regular butter, the other cannabutter. If you want to bake cannabis edibles, cannabutter is the recipe you absolutely need to know. Cannabutter is simply cannabis-infused butter. It can be achieved with Indica, Sativa, CBD, THC, shake, oil… and can come in various potencies and flavours depending on the butter and weed you will use. Cannabutter will generally have the same texture as regular butter, but the stronger it is, the greener it looks.

How to make weed butter? The easy recipe.

Making weed butter is easy and methods will vary from one recipe to another. For the most impatient ones, the Mason Jar method, where cannabis is infused for 2 hours in a jar, will be the best. If you have more time, you can use a crockpot (this is actually the most common way to make weed butter and my personal favourite as well). Whether you are using a crockpot or a Mason Jar, the recipe is pretty straight forward. It consists in melting (regular) butter with cannabis (oil, shack, trim…) for from 2 to 12 hours, depending on methods, at low temperatures. Once cannabis is infused and butter is cold, your cannabutter is ready to be used. On a slice of bread, within cannabis edibles… Delicious possibilities are endless. Usually, I have 2 cannabutter in my fridge: Unsalted that I use for baking and salted for cooking or just on bread.

How long to cook cannabutter in crockpot?

Like I was saying, different methods exist to cook cannabutter. One of them is to use a crockpot. I recommend placing the crockpot on “Low” to avoid risk of burning and cook for at least 6 hours. However, the longer you cook your cannabutter, the stronger the product will be. So depending on the potency and taste you are looking for, you could be cooking your butter for 12 hours. If you are new to cannabis edibles and are cooking cannabutter for the 1st time, start with 6 hours.

How long does cannabutter last?

Making cannabutter can take a few hours, but the good thing about this butter is that you can keep it in your fridge for long without flavours or potency to be impacted. Your weed butter should last up to 2 weeks in your fridge. If you want to keep it longer, freeze it. Once frozen, it should last up to 6 months without losing any of its medical properties, nor flavours. It will be the same for the cannabis edibles you will bake.

How much cannabutter does an ounce make?

It will all depend on how potent you want your cannabutter to be. An ounce in 1 pound of butter is very different than an ounce in 2 pounds of butter.

Can you overcook cannabutter?

Like any other cannabis edibles recipe, when you bake cannabutter, risks are you might overcook it. Overcooking it might change taste, colour, texture but might as well have an impact on the medical benefits of the cannabis you are using. Indeed, at high temperature, it could just completely evaporate.

How to make cannabutter fast?

There are over a dozen different methods for making cannabutter on the internet: oven, crockpot, pot… They all will allow you to get great butter, but if you can’t wait any longer to bake your cannabis edibles, the Mason Jar method is the fastest way to get cannabutter. It is also low maintenance, simple and has the least amount of smell or mess. But how to make cannabutter with Mason Jars exactly? Grab a pen and a notebook and write down the instructions below:

You will need: A mason jar, a pot, a thermometer, cannabis, butter

Step 1: Grind up your cannabis buds.

Step 2: Fill a pot up halfway with water, and bring to a temperature around 200°F, just under boiling.

Step 3: While your water is warming up, cut the butter into cubes and add it to your mason jar. Add your cannabis and close the lid.

Step 4: Place the mason jar in your pot.

Step 5: Keep temperature around 200 degrees and allow the butter to infuse for 2 hours.

Step 6: After 2 hours, remove the jar from the water and strain the cannabis out of the butter.

Step 7: Stir up your butter and place it in the fridge to cool and it.

What to make with cannabutter?

Cannabutter is very versatile. Like regular butter, you can use it is various ways. It can be added to recipes of cannabis edibles (weed cookies, pot brownies...). It can also be eaten on a slice of bread, or added to a dish to add some flavour. You can even use cannabutter topically on skin burns!

Can you freeze cannabutter?

Want to have cannabutter ready to use every time you want to cook cannabis edibles? Don’t hesitate to bake weed butter in big quantities and freeze what you are not using. Freezing is a really great way to store butter, or any other cannabis edibles, for as long as possible, without changing taste or benefits. The best way to store your cannabutter is in an opaque container to prevent light exposure. It should be sealed in airtight containers to prevent damage from condensation. You can put your butter in a jar or ziplock bags for example. Cannabutter is actually like any other cannabis edibles or food you would want to freeze, there are no specific recommendations to follow. The only thing you should know is that it is not recommended to keep cannabutter (or any cannabis edibles) in the freezer more than 6 months.

How much weed to make butter?

It will depend on how much cannabutter you want to make, what kind of cannabis product you are using as well as the dosage you are trying to reach. However we can give you the following information:

  • If you are using 0.5g of a low-quality weed (1% to 5% THC), your 5g cannabutter will have a light dosage
  • If you are using 2g of a low-quality weed (1% to 5% THC), this is considered to be a high dosage. Using more weed would be a heavy dosage

Need further details on how much weed you need to make cannabutter? I recommend you to use a dosage calculator like this one for example.
