Everything you need to know about the Lever Lock

by Shally Warner Owner

The lever lock derives its name from the fact that this lock system functions around the lever. Mostly available in the three and five lever options, this is a safety lock system, considered to be quite durable and steadfast. The key used is bitted; which is used to move the lever to the desired height for locking and unlocking mechanisms. The point to note is that - larger the numbers of levers the more are the key shapes available thereby making the entire lock system more secure and safe.

Where is it fixed?

The lever locks are fitted to the back of the door and have a single keyhole. It is usually installed onto wooden doors. One big plus point is that the lock can be locked from either side – inside and outside – and can be opened from either side using a key. Also, this type of lock system is never fixed to the surface of the door. It is usually fixated onto the door edge.

This type of lock system is mostly fitted onto the front and back exit and entry doors in residences as well as commercial place

How to know that it is a lever lock?

The number of levers is usually stamped on the face of the lock system. So, a 3-lever will have the words ‘3 LEVER’ mentioned clearly on the lock plate.

Difference between the 3-lever and 5-lever locks

The difference is quite obvious. The number of levers in the 3-lever system is three and five in case of the 5-lever lock. As mentioned, the higher the number of levers, the more secure is the system. Hence, it means that the 3-lever the system is not as safe as the 5-lever lock. It is relatively easier to make duplicate keys of the 3-lever lock system vis-à-vis the other one.

Tips to buy the right lever lock

  1. Buy from a trusted supplier. Whether you choose to purchase online or offline, it is best to always ensure that the seller is trustworthy and known for selling premium quality products.

  2. Choose to buy from a the seller that offers installation services too. With a lever lock, it is best to have an expert locksmith or carpenter complete the fixation process of the lock to the door. If the supplier is able to offer installation services, things become a lot easier for the buyer.

  3. Ensure that the lock has been tested for burglary techniques and is manufactured conforming to the ANSI standards.
