Patnitop is a beautiful picturesque hill station in the heavenly state of Jammu and Kashmir. 1. History

Patnitop name comes from the phrase “Patan Da Talab” that literally means the “Pond of the Princess”. People believe that once there was a beautiful pond in this place and the princess of the King was a frequent visitor to the pond to take bath in it. The present-day cultural heritage of Patnitop can be traced back to the times of Dogra King, Raja Dhruv who started his rule over this place from 1730.

2. Culture

Patnitop is known for its rich cultural heritage and traditions. Co-existent of all types of religions ensures festivals like Naag Panchami, Lohri, Id-ul-Fitr and Id-ul-Zuha are celebrated equally with great pomp and fervour. The local language spoken here is Dogri though Urdu and Hindi are also common. The uniqueness in the cuisines lies in its heavy use of saffron.

3. Places to visit

Patnitop is spoiled with beautiful locations. Some of the popular places in Patnitop includes Nathatop, Naag Mandir, Mantalai, Shudh Mahadev, Gauri Kund and Mansar Lake. Skiing is very popular amongst adventure seeking tourists coming to Patnitop. Many people after coming to Patnitop trek 11km to the 3500m high Shiva Ghar.

4. Weather

Patnitop being a hill station has a very unique climatology. They experience hot summers with a temperature rising to as high as 40 degree Celsius. Though it should be noted that evenings are pretty pleasant during the summers. It receives moderate rainfall. Winter sets in from late November and lasts till February with temperature decrease to -14 degree Celsius accompanied by heavy snowfall.

5. How to reach?

The nearest airport is the Jammu airport 111km away while the nearest railway station is in Udampur. There are plenty of buses and taxis available to take you from the airport or the railway station to Patnitop. Buses are easily available from Pathankot, Jammu and Srinagar.

6. Best time to visit

With the place getting ample snowfall, undoubtedly the best time to visit Patnitop is in the months of winter. Since there is a heavy rush of tourists, you are advisable to book a Patnitop tour package from Katra or other places in advance.
