An engine is a complex machine that works with the help of several different parts. Each part of an engine plays a crucial role in its operation such as heat transmission, reducing friction, movement, fuel intake, and much more. Dry Cylinder Sleeves: These are one of the basic piston protectors. They are constructed using high-grade materials such as cast iron and ceramic-nickel plating, as they need to withstand high temperatures and offer protection from impurities. These are thinnest among all other type of sleeves. Cylinder Sleeves do not come in contact with the engine coolant but rather than that, they provide a very close fit with the jacket inside the cylinder block, in order to protect the piston from heat.

Wet Cylinder Sleeves: Wet Cylinder Sleeves are produced using the same tough materials, but they offer protection to the piston in a different way than dry cylinder sleeves. Unlike the dry ones, they come in direct contact with the engine coolant. Many times the wet cylinder sleeve is fitted with tiny gaps, which help disperse the impurities and heat. The term used for these kinds of sleeves is water-jacket liner, but these are another form of wet cylinder sleeve. If the sleeve is not having a cooling jacket, the sleeve will create one itself by coming in contact with the jacket present in the cylinder block.

Finned Cylinder Sleeves: The same type of sturdy materials like cast iron and ceramic-nickel plating are used for the production of finned cylinder sleeves. These types of sleeves are designed for the air-cooled engine and in operation works, which is much like functioning of dry cylinder sleeves as it uses air as the medium for cooling the motor. However, these sleeves are fitted with tiny fins, for allowing the incoming air to create a strong pressure around the cylinder for providing effective cooling.
