ELIXSYS Successfully Create Valuable Minerals, Metals and Rare Earth Elements From Coal Fly Ash

ELIXSYS Inc. has developed an innovative modular chemical process to extract valuable minerals, metals, and rare earth elements from coal combustion waste with zero waste and environmental impact. The company plans to bring these materials to industrial supply chains and has already developed marketing agreements.

ELIXSYS Inc. has successfully concluded batch level testing to separate marketable products and materials from Coal Combustion Products (CCPs) with near zero waste. “We, along with our business partners, believe that ELIXSYS is the only company that has demonstrated an environmentally benign process for consuming all CCPs,” says Joe Preston, Elixsys President. The process was repeatedly demonstrated in kilogram level batch runs.

The ELIXSYS Module 2 process leaches coal combustion products, such as fly ash, by separating insoluble silica and solubilizing most of the remaining elements. After solid/liquid separation, the liquid is sequentially precipitated into separate products and metals of interest. This process is highly profitable because it separates the metals into either hydroxides, oxides, or carbonates to take advantage of the local ash characteristics and market prices.

The resulting products include ferric oxide pigment, aluminum hydroxide, magnesium hydroxide, calcium carbonate, and a misch of rare earth elements. “This technology will allow ELIXSYS to provide customers with a reliable long-term domestic source of substantial volumes of chemicals and metals recycled from ash,” according to Dan Curry, ELIXSYS Director of Commercial Strategy. ELIXSYS will use a partner to separate the misch concentrate into individual rare earth elements.

Previously, ELIXSYS Inc. had completed its 100-hour pilot-scale validation tests of Module 1.

About ELIXSYS Inc.

Elixsys is developing innovative modular chemical processes to extract valuable minerals, metals, and rare earth elements from coal combustion waste. The modules combine proven and environmentally safe processes with innovative sequencing and trade secret chemical formulas to deliver marketable commodities. Recovered materials are in demand as cement, fertilizer, and herbicide additives and as specialty filler products used in the production of high-quality paper, plastics, rubber and specialty coatings.
