Electrical cable - The messengers of electricity
by Pooja Late so cutNobody has seen the
invisible power that drives all the machinery. All that we have seen are just
the switch and the light, a switch and the spin. But what are these invisible
things that drive our day to day life itself? These invisible power people are
the moving electrons. Electricity is nothing but electrons in motion causing
electromagnetic fields which in turn produce current. This simple principle is
a great power that is driving the world invisibly because great and important
things are invisible.
The invisible drivers and their vehicles
As said above the motion
of the electrons produce current. This needs a path, doesn't it? The path is
given through materials called conductors. Conductors are substances that are
capable of passing the electrons through them. Not all materials are
conductors. Some don’t allow passage these are non-conductors. These are wood,
paper rubber etc.
Electrical
cables are conductors that are made up of elements that have
a high potential to conduct electricity. These are mainly made up of copper,
aluminium, iron. these metals show high potential for electrical conductivity. Hence
these materials are used in electrical
cables.
Where
do they play their part?
These electrical cables are used almost
everywhere. If we take a look around everything is connected and they are
connected using electrical cables.
They are the messengers
of electricity. They carry the charges from one place to another. Whenever
light is switched on or a television is turned on the circuit is closed and the
charges start to flow through the circuit. That's how the appliances we see everyday
run on electricity.
Types
of electric cables or the messengers of current
There are numerous types
of electrical cables now evolved. These
cables have different potential and are differently abled carriers by
themselves. Some carry more current while some carry less. Some can transmit
electricity over large distances while some can transmit over short distances
only.
Some cable types are different from others in
terms of their amount of protection given to them because they travel
underground or above in the open air. These cables need extra covering and
protection to avoid any wastage of electricity.
·
Coaxial cables or coax electrical cables
·
Twisted pair electrical cables
·
Optical cables ( modern and extensively
used )
These are the common
types of electrical cables that are
widely used nowadays everywhere.
Cables also carry codes
and colour schemes which make them more specific and easy to classify.
Choosing
the right messengers
When it comes to
electricity choosing the correct cable is like choosing between life choices.
Electricity is sometimes dangerous when left unattended or leaked. There are
various cases of accidents due to electricity. The main reasons would be the
leakage of current due to improper cables. When these cables are unknowingly touched
they transfer the electricity through the body causing the person to be
electrocuted. There is also fire accident cases recorded due to a spark of
current that burns everything down.
Hence to avoid these
accidents one should choose the proper and good quality electrical cables.
·
Know the purpose of the cable. If it is a
house wiring cable then a twisted pair can be used. If it is a long distance
transmission then an optical fibre cable can be used.
·
Check its efficiency. Checking it at the
retail store before buying it is important.
·
Check for damages or ruptures
·
Maintain or change cables at regular
intervals.
If approached properly
and maintained well these messengers will work diligently for a long time and
offer good service and safe electricity transfer.
