Running a small business has a learning curve steeper than most skills. But, if you're willing to keep at it long enough, success becomes inevitable. We've put together a few tips to help you improve the performance of your small business.

Shift Your Data to the Cloud

Computer hardware can be a huge resource drain to your company. If you're paying to update them often, that's another expense to add to your balance sheets. So, many companies have shifted their data to the cloud as a way to cut costs. By getting rid of physical computer infrastructure, operating costs have never been lower. So, if you've kept everything on physical computers, try switching to the cloud. More than likely, it'll meet your needs without costing as much. Plus, most cloud solutions offer great scalability. That way, when growth becomes frantic, you won't struggle to keep up.

Switch to a New Shipping Company

When selling merchandise, shipping appears to overtake many other costs. Since most products come from China, they travel long distances before their destinations. You can reduce how much it costs to run your company by working with a new shipper. You can find an excellent company to work with where shipping from China to the US doesn't cost much. So, you can find one willing to do it for relatively cheap. Anything saved by switching will reduce the financial strain affecting your company, too. Look at more than one offer and compare them to see what's the best. Typically, one has a much more competitive offer, making it an easy decision. Once you've seen the savings, you'll wonder why it's not something that happened sooner.

Outsource Any Jobs You Can

Besides shipping costs, labor typically has the largest place on the balance sheet. So, if you're looking for some way to cut costs, there's an obvious place to start. Outsourcing sounds like it would be too complicated for it to be worthwhile at first glance. But, most countries have far lower labor rates, hardly a pittance in comparison. Best of all, it's not hard to find labor similar in quality to what's found back home. Search for a company that offers outsourced labor in your industry by looking online.

Negotiate With Your Suppliers

When companies manufacture products, their suppliers dictate much of their operating costs. Striking a deal with them where you're paying less per unit could make a huge difference. Try giving them a call next time you're placing an order and asking to negotiate. If you've been their customer for a while, they'll be willing to talk. It's usually easiest to open negotiations once you're looking to expand, too. That way, they can earn more overall, while still cutting your costs. Just get them to cut unit price and make up the difference with volume.

Improve Your Sales Ability

As a business owner, sales are part of what defines any successful enterprise. If you're unable to convince people to buy products, nothing will make a difference. At the same time, the opposite is true. By developing greater sales ability, even mediocre businessmen can turn their fortunes around. So, look around for some sales workshops in the nearby community. Most places have conferences throughout the year where you can network successfully. By going to one of them, you'll meet others trying to develop their skills, too. Then, you can work together and keep improving after everything is over.

Monitor Your Performance History

Nothing matters if you're not tracking your performance. Without a record, it's impossible to know whether something has a positive impact. In fact, you won't know if you're sinking the company, either. That's why we've always meticulously tracked performance and kept it in a spreadsheet.

How to Improve the Performance of Your Small Business

Once you've run a company for a while, it's not hard to make it successful. It's the first part of the journey that seems to give people the toughest time, usually. So, if you're struggling right now, realize this isn't how it will always be. At some point, you'll feel as if you're a captain standing at the helm of a trireme.
