Don't Be Panicked by a DWI
by Kevin Smith AuthorIf you're facing your first DWI or DUI, you
could understandably be quite nervous. However, it's incredibly important that
you remain as calm as possible. The first mistake that many people make in
these situations is that they say too much, begin rambling, or try to come up
with plausible excuses. Sometimes, saying nothing is not only preferable, but
actually in your best interest. When possible, you should contact a Houston DWI
attorney, so that you can begin getting prepared.
Not All Lawyers Are the Same
Just because an attorney is willing to take
your DWI case doesn't mean that he or she is the best fit for you. If you want
to avoid imprisonment and keep your license, you'll be best served by having
legal representation that is exceedingly experienced in these sorts of cases
and willing to fight on your behalf. Remember that your lawyer's job is to
defend your rights to the extent that the law allows. If you feel like your
attorney is trying to force you into a plea deal, you are within your rights to
opt for a different lawyer.
As a general rule, you should never be
strong armed into anything. If your legal counsel genuinely believes that a
plea deal is best, you should be given an explanation as to why. Be wary of any
attorney that seems to simply want to brush your case under the rug and quickly
move on to the next client. Your freedom and your record are both on the line.
You'll be the one living with the consequences of whatever sentence is
delivered. Don't be afraid to demand an explanation. A plea deal might be
what's best, but an experienced DWI attorney won't be scared of going to trial
if it seems like your best option. An experienced trial lawyer isn't
intimidated by the courtroom, and you shouldn't be either.
Be Forewarned and Forearmed
Your attorney should help you every step of
the way, so that you know what to expect. You need to know what you can and
can't do, as well as how to phrase your statements and when you shouldn't say
anything at all. Police officers can be quite adept at making situations seem
more dire than they actually are. That fear can lead people to make stupid
mistakes and get themselves in further trouble. With a skilled Houston DWI
attorney, you shouldn't be nervous. Sometimes,
a cool head is your best defense.
