Documentary Series Looks At Easyjet’s Efforts To Narrow Aviation Recruitment Gap

by Liz Seyi Digital marketing manager

As huge numbers of Britons continue to enjoy all of the luxuries and convenience of air travel, the aviation industry has come under such pressure that there is now a global shortage of pilots. The new documentary series easyJet: Inside the Cockpit is presently giving ITV viewers an insight into the easyJet airline's efforts to help to plug that gap.

A major campaign filmed for TV

This year, easyJet launched its largest recruitment drive yet - but how far will it come in meeting its aims? The new three-part series looks at just-qualified pilots trying to get to grips with taking flights for easyJet.

Their responsibilities can look very daunting at times, even if each of them routinely has a training pilot by their side, helping them to become accustomed to their role. The series indeed lives up to its name by showing footage that ITV's cameras have captured literally inside the cockpit.

Aiming to take flight in more ways than one

Stephen Fry provides the narration as we see rookie pilots admitting their concerns about taking to the air. Their worries can seem understandable to many people who lack in-depth knowledge of the aviation sector; however, the series also reveals that more than 300 easyJet pilots are not only inexperienced, but also learning on the job.

The documentary series has a particular focus on female recruits who are learning how to handle the planes. This focus looks very deliberate, with easyJet having expressed its hopes that its recruitment drive can boost diversity in its base of pilots, in addition to addressing a greatly concerning general aviation personnel gap.

As an Aviation Recruiter, we have been pleased with what we have seen in the series, the first part of which aired on Monday 14th August. You can still watch episodes on ITV's catch-up service ITV Hub, and enjoy the kind of cockpit view that is hardly usual, but certainly eye-opening, on mainstream TV.
