by Willie Riner Marketing Manager

So, you want to become a fashion designer or want to get your hands on DIY designing or simply wish to patch clothes around your house? Doesn’t matter why you're here as long as your aim is to learn to sew.

You must certainly know that sewing is an art as well as a skill that can be acquired over time and it’s never too late to get started.

So let’s dive into some beginner lessons for you to practice. Because trust me, you need to get a sturdy hand at the task and only practice can help you materialize your great ideas.

5 Sewing Tips For Beginners

  1. Start sewing straight lines

Just like when you’re new to writing as a kid, they start you off with patterns and straight lines. Likewise, you need to start with straight lines while sewing as well.

This is the easiest to sew and practicing this will give you more confidence. You can try this on any household item, which is not too intricate.

Do not jump straight to clothing, as they can be quite challenging. Take it easy and steady with sewing easy things like pillow covers, blankets, and burp cloths.

  1. Learn how to cut fabric

When you’ve got your hand at the easy household stuff, try sewing clothes. The first thing you need to do here is to get a good design.

Since you’re not a professional, stick to an easy design that you can sew. The next step is a major one that is cutting the cloth. This sounds pretty simple, but you can only know after trying it out.

When you cut pieces of cloth, you must ensure that they are symmetric in shape and size or else you’ll have a lopsided finished product.

  1. Mark your fabric

Once you’ve cut your fabric, you should learn how to mark your fabric in the right places. Use a measuring tape here and you won’t go wrong.

You can use chalk or a pencil for the markings, this is a great way to mark out all the little details on the pattern. Also, ensure that you mark the tucks before you start stitching.

  1. Pin the fabric

You can’t just start stitching your pieces together without having a rough idea of what goes where.

You need directions and not just because you’re new to sewing but because everyone does. Knowing when to pin horizontally and vertically is key to having a well-designed garment.

Always ensure that whenever you keep your pins horizontally when you want to sew edges and vertically otherwise.

  1. Know how to clip corners

Sewing an edge is easy enough, the real difficulty lies in the corners. You must be extra careful in these areas.

You can avoid puckering and wrinkling while clipping curves and cutting corners. Curves are mainly of two kinds namely, outward corners (usually found at the edge of a blanket)

and inward corners (found in a neckline).

Clipping these are mastering the curve is what sewing is all about. You can never successfully sew without an efficient sewing machine. Valsew has a brilliant range of cutting and sewing machines in GA, which can scale your sewing by tenfold. You can only believe it if you try it.
