Dogs are a man’s best friend. How could they not be? They are cute, hilarious, and some of them have really funny and adorable names. They get really excited when you come home from a long day at work or just a quick run to the store. So why not show them some appreciation and love by making your best friend, their own, personal leather collar.

There are several advantages to choosing a leather collar,  whether it is with round leather cords or flat leather cords:
They are durable: they don’t fray or break and tend to last and look better longer. They are also lightweight, pliable, easy to clean, made of all-natural material. You can also choose from a wide variety of sizes and styles.
Most of the time, leather collars have a belt buckle with holes. These buckles are also quite durable and they can be adjusted as your dog’s hair grows out or after your growing puppy.

The most common leather dog collars are made out of flat leather or roller/round leather. Each has its own advantages and both come in many different colors. Flat leather collars are best for short-haired dogs since it may cause fur breakage on long haired dogs. Round leather collars are much thinner, narrower and much lighter. Its shape helps give it strength and it prevents matting of the dog’s coat.

All you need is a leather cord, a D-ring, a tongue buckle, rivets, acrylic paint and an acrylic finisher. This little project can be done in under an hour and is perfect for people who just started working with leather.

Here is a quick guide on how to do it:

Run the strap through the buckle to figure out where to place the d-ring and rivets
Pull the other end through the d-ring and put it between the straps, the mark the place where you want rivets on either side of the ring to be
Remove the ring and unfold the leather, then punch the holes through. When you fold the leather back, you should have four perfectly lined up holes.
Put in the rivets nearest the buckle first and then slide the d-ring back up and und place the second rivet set.
Now it is time to decide on how long the collar should be.
Lastly punch out the buckle notches and then you are done!
