Destiny 2: Master Vault of Glass exposes one of the game's biggest problems

by TM Maria Be a king in your own kingdom
As someone who regularly does Master and Grandmaster Nightfalls, as well as several raids each week, I consider myself a finals player in Destiny 2. Overall, I'm always happy to dive into whatever PvE challenge the game's developer, Bungie, throws for me. . . However, the Master Vault of Glass raid that Bungie recently launched is an exception, and the reason is that the raid's 1350 power level requires players to gain many power levels in their Seasonal Artifact in order for their combat to be less punitive.

Tier grinding bonuses is a terrible, outdated system.

It wouldn't be a problem if the upgrade process past the 1320 pinnacle gear cap was fun and engaging, but it isn't. The only effective way to accumulate a large amount of experience to improve your artifact is by completing rewards, which are monotonous and feel like chores. To-do lists that force me to kill X amount of enemies or get X amount of kills with a specific weapon type are not pleasant, they are painful. And I hate feeling like I have to go through this task just to get a shot at the Master Vault of Glass raid.

This is an issue that has always existed in Destiny 2, but until now players have never needed to gain more than 15 power levels with their artifact. Most of these are easy to come by just by playing normally and completing the seasonal challenges, as they don't require as much experience as the levels that come after the first 15. The fact that Bungie pushes players to grind at least five or six to reach a power level of 1340+, each level requires more than two million experience, leaving many players frustrated with the complexity of this process.

It is true that my friends and I do not technically know how to need more power levels to complete the Master Vault of Glass. After all, Grandmaster Nightfalls limits your power level at 1335 no matter how many levels you've gained and pits you against enemies at 1360 - 10 more than the 1350 enemies in Master Vault of Glass and 25 power levels more than you. But in Grandmaster Nightfalls you have a lot more opportunities to deal with enemies from a distance and also get more revive tokens (assuming you prioritize defeating champions). The Master version of the Vault of Glass raid has tons of close encounters and swarms of enemies that threaten to quickly overwhelm you if you are not in the 1340+ power level range, even if you are using defensive strategies. And one of the best versions of Destiny 2. It also doesn't limit your level as the Grand Masters do, wants players to upgrade their level to the Raid Master.

Bungie needs to introduce new ways to level effectively if this is going to be part of the end game.

If Bungie is aiming to make leveling a more important part of Destiny's endgame PvE experience, it must introduce new leveling systems that are more appealing than the ones we have now. Expecting players to consistently earn rewards is terrible, and it almost makes me want to not bother with Master Vault of Glass. It puzzles me that difficult end-game activities like normal raids and Nightfall attacks reward much less experience than going out and killing base monsters in a patrol area for a reward. Why not reward players with a wealth of experience for doing the Weekly Nightfall Grandmaster, completing raids and raid challenges, or performing well in Competitive Crucible?

In the end, leveling up just isn't fun or satisfying, and it sucks given that I love every other part of the current Destiny 2 endgame experience. It's probably still going to 1340+ as my friends want. to play Raid Master and I like to overcome some difficult content with them, but getting to that point will not be fun. And if Bungie continues to push the power level as part of Endgame without improving the upgrade systems, I'm not sure how long I can put up with the boredom.
