Designing a Good Feather Flag

by Kevin Smith Author

Feather flags are one of the most popular shapes of advertising flags. Their unique shape makes them stand out when put next to buildings. But, it's also familiar enough to consumers that they recognize it as an advertisement. Just using a feather flag will draw attention to it. But, this fact doesn't mean you can be careless when designing it. A badly designed flag will reflect poorly on your business.

Text

Every advertising flag needs text. How else will consumers know what the flag is for? But, you have to be careful when choosing text for your flag. Since it tapers at the top and bottom, you don't have as much room for text as you would on a rectangular flag. All flags should keep their messages short, and this is especially true with feather flags. If you can use one simple word, do it.

Images

With the limited space on the flag mostly being taken up by text, you don't have much room for images. You should try to avoid images for the most part. But, sometimes images are necessary. Consumers do need to be able to tell what business the flag is advertising. So, if you need to, use your logo. Good logos are designed to be recognizable when they're small or at a distance, so if you have to make it smaller to fit, it should still be clear to consumers. Non-logo images should definitely be avoided.

Colors

The biggest attention drawer is going to be the colors of the flag. Naturally, you should put the most thought into choosing your colors. If your business is associated with a particular color or combination of colors, you should definitely use that because brand recognition is a very strong thing. If your business is associated with no colors or only with one, you need to be careful to create an attractive color scheme. Using complementary colors (colors across from each other on the color wheel) is always a good way to go. You can also choose colors of the same temperature and they'll look good together. Of course, you can also just pick any two colors at random provided they look good together.

A feather flag is an extremely useful advertising tool if you design it well. Take care to keep it simple yet eye-catching. That's how you'll draw in new customers and tell the old ones that there's a reason they should stop by again.
