Tips for Designing a Rectangle Flag

by Kevin Smith Author

Rectangle flags are a great way to advertise a sale or other special event. Other flag shapes may be more interesting but rectangles are the best shape for more complicated flags. They don't have curves, which means lettering or pictures that cover the length of the flag won't look squashed at one end. Although this is the best shape for more complex flags, you need to be careful that the flag design isn't too busy. Having the freedom to do more with a flag can mean that it's easy to overdo it.

Colors

Having a colorful flag is great but you shouldn't have every color under the sun on your flag. You should limit yourself to two or three colors that look nice together and aren't too hard on the eyes. Pairing white with one or two darker colors is always a good way to go. Also, the colors should be somewhat relevant to the event you're advertising. If it's some sort of holiday event, using colors relevant to that holiday is the way to go. If it's not, colors associated with your business are a good choice.

Text

Text is necessary for an advertising flag but you need to be careful about how much you use. Chances are, the flag will be placed on the side of the road. This means most people will be reading it from a moving vehicle. The text needs to be simple enough to read quickly. And, since rectangular advertising flags are taller than they are long, the text needs to be easy to read sideways. Combine these two factors and a flag with too much text becomes impossible to read. Put only necessary text on the flag and you should be fine. Also, make sure the text is large enough to be read from a reasonable distance away.

Images

The same thing goes for images. A picture that's too complicated will be hard to make out. This issue is not as prevalent since it's very likely you'll be using your logo on the flag. If your business has a well-designed logo, it will be simple and easy to make out even when it's turned sideways and viewed from a moving vehicle.

If you keep these few simple things in mind, you'll be able to design a great advertising flag. Rectangle flags may not have the most eye-catching shape but if you design them right they can bring in a lot more business than a strangely-shaped flag can.
