Denmark Opens World's First Waste Food Supermarket

by Core Mini Bins Services
Every year Denmark produces 700,000 tons of waste food. This is an issue that has been highlighted in the media not just in Denmark, but worldwide - the amount of food that is surplus to requirements and that is thrown away is obscene, and many companies are now working on ways of tackling this.

Wefood Opens

Denmark's flagship store Wefood is the first supermarket in the world that is dedicated to selling solely waste food and surplus produce. This is in an effort to tackle the waste that the country produces and also to highlight this issue before members of the public.

What's the Benefit?

In addition to helping members of the public who are concerned about the amount of wasted food that Denmark throws away each year by offering them a positive way to tackle this issue, the food is also going to be up to 50% cheaper than that offered by mainstream supermarkets. This will act as an incentive for people to shop there while educating them about the issues facing the country regarding waste food.

What Will It Sell?

Currently, Wefood has agreements in place with suppliers of bread, meat, fruit and vegetables, so they will already be able to offer quite a variety of products to their consumers. They will hope to expand this further to offer larger ranges once they have become established, and provide the full supermarket experience to their customers. All the food will still be edible, but will be considered by mainstream supermarkets as 'waste', either due to appearance or best before dates.

Will it Work?

Denmark is already one of the leading countries of the world when it comes to tackling food waste - in the last 5 years they have already reduced the amount of waste food they produce by 25%, and this is a definite sign that consumers want to make a change in the world and make a difference. Wefood is open in Copenhagen and it is currently being run as a charity. Once it has had time to become an established business and prove that what it's doing works, it will not be long at all before many others follow suit. Public perception on waste food has changed dramatically over the past few years with many countries altering their methods to reduce waste food. If this supermarket is a success then there is no doubt other countries will follow in its footsteps.
