Croydon’s Historic Fair Field Moves A Step Closer To ‘World-Class’ Transformation

by Liz Seyi Digital marketing manager

Many people who have searched for or lived in Properties In Croydon – such as those that constitute the ISLAND development – will be familiar with Fairfield Halls. The arts, entertainment and conference centre – which is presently still closed for a £30 million revamp – has a rich history since the 1960s that has seen it host such famous acts as The Beatles, Stevie Wonder and Pink Floyd.

However, even some locals may not be so familiar with the deeper heritage of the site on which the venue is situated – ‘Fair Field’. The site gained this name due to the well-known fair that it hosted until about 1860, and it now looks set to enter a whole new and enthralling chapter of its history.

‘Bold and innovative’ proposal sought for key space

As reported by The Architects’ Journal, six teams have now been shortlisted in the race to design a “world-class, exemplary” public space outside the landmark venue.

Among the finalists are Martha Schwartz Partners with PLP Architecture and star engineer AKT II, as well as Hassell with up-and-coming London practice We Made That. Gustafson Porter + Bowman with BuroHappold were also shortlisted, as were Expedition Engineering with emerging outfit Periscope and leading Dutch landscaping firm West 8.

The shortlist is completed by DSDHA with landscape architect Todd LongstaffeGowan, and finally a collaborative bid by MICA Architects with Charles Holland Architects and renowned contemporary designer Adam Nathaniel Furman.

The aim of the tender process is to select a “bold and innovative” proposal to transform the large prominent public square, creating “one of the most exciting public spaces in London.”

An exciting time for Croydon – and anyone interested in living here

Croydon Council chief executive Jo Negrini commented: “This is an exciting next step for the Fair Field project. There’s been a lot of interest from the moment this scheme was announced, showing the industry has understood the importance of this space for Croydon’s cultural quarter and Fairfield Halls.

“We’re proud of and ambitious for our borough and what it has to offer. Fair Field will be another landmark we can all be proud of, for generations to come.

“I’m looking forward to the next step of the process where we will get to see what concept designs will be put forward so we can begin to shape this vitally important site.”

The six finalists will be required to submit their concepts by late May.

All in all, it’s an extremely momentous time to be a resident of the borough or contemplating a new life here. Register your interest in the remaining properties in Croydon that make up the ISLAND tower today, and you could yet begin that new chapter sooner than you think!
