Creative Ways to Use Granite in Your Home

by Kevin Smith Author

Granite is one of the most beautiful stones you can have in your home. Custom granite countertops from Marietta are just one of several ways to incorporate this stone into your home design.

Cutting Boards

An easy and affordable way to add granite to your home is to use it as a cutting board. Granite suppliers will sometimes offer smaller granite scraps left over from previous projects. These smaller slabs are perfect for cutting surfaces. Like granite countertops, however, your cutting boards will need regular sealings to protect them from staining and bacteria. Regular usage means more frequent treatments of sealer, but cutting boards are easier to seal than a full countertop. Pair granite cutting boards with butcher’s block surfaces or other stone surfaces. Some homeowners ask for cutting boards in the same color as their countertops and only use the cutting board as a working surface, thus preserving their countertops.

Backsplashes

In addition to kitchen and bathroom countertops, homeowners are also using granite panels and tiles for backsplashes. Backsplashes protect your walls from water and food debris, but they're also aesthetically beautiful. Extend your countertop material up onto the walls of your kitchen for a seamless look or contrast it with a darker stone for a dramatic effect. Unlike your countertops, backsplashes don’t need annual treatments of sealer; just wipe away water spots or food particles with a granite-friendly cleaner.

Tabletops

The minimalist style has taken over the industry in the last few years, bringing many new design ideas into the home. One of the most popular is the stone tabletop on metallic legs. Despite its weight, you can achieve this modern look using granite coffee tables and nightstands. Use white or grey marble with rose gold or silver legs to create this unique look in your living room or bedroom. You can also use granite for a dining room table or bar top in your entertainment room.

Shower Panels

Gone are the days of fiberglass, one-piece tubs and showers. More homeowners are using natural stone paneling in their bathrooms to create a luxury spa experience. You can choose to seal and polish your granite, giving it a beautiful shine or you can leave the stone rough and unfinished. Keep in mind that stone floors are very slippery; prevent slips and falls by laying down traction mats or stickers.
