Compact SUVs in India

The trend of compact SUVs was started by Renault by launching their Duster. But this segment actually gained a lot of boost after Ford launched their Ecosport Compact SUVs. Many potential car buyers were fascinated by the addition of this new segment. Many journalists and customers were pleased with the peace of mind these cars provided and were fairly happy with these two cars performance.

But what is actually a compact SUV? The Indian Government decided to increase the tax of the vehicles which measured more than 4 metres in length. Hence many automobile firms decided to create such cars which measured 4 metres in length. Although the Duster’s length is more than 4 metres, The Ford Ecosport manged to strike a perfect balance by managing a length under 4 metres and not looking weird in any way.

The main reason people started accepting compact SUVs because they provided good ground clearance without compromising in the driving dynamics of the vehicle. These cars are also priced fairly cheap because of the tax exemptions by being in the sub 4 metre category.

Soon Maruti, Tata and Hyundai joined the Compact SUV segment by launching their vehicles and hence enjoying the perks of being such a demanding segment. All the vehicles tried to provide something different from the rest of them but the primary purpose was the same. A decent vehicle with good amount of features, good to drive, could tackle bad roads, and also weren’t too expensive.

Currently Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza is the compact SUV segment leader. This is because in India Maruti enjoys a large amount of customer loyalty. Most of the people who are buying their first vehicle tend to go for a Maruti product. Hyundai earned a lot with their compact SUV, Creta.

The newest entrant in this segment was Tata with the launch of their critically acclaimed product, Nexon. So seeing this trend of the Compact SUVs, we can definitely sure that this segment is meant to last in the market for quite a long time.
