What is the Future of Automobiles?

by Kanishk Naithani Automobile Blogger

A while back, Hybrid cars were considered to be a marvel in the automobile industry. The combination of internal combustion engines and hybrid powertrain created various possibilities for the vehicles. Electric cars were present even that time but were not particularly paid any attention by anyone.

Years later, Tesla revolutionised the automobile industry by launching their first product, the Model S. It was a sedan with the performance of the supercar. The Model S was Car Geeks wet dream. The features, the technology it boasted of was just staggering. The automobile industry was preparing to consider the possibilities of creating electric vehicles.

Meanwhile in India, Hybrid technology wasn’t garnering much attention by the Indian public. The reason for that was high costs of purchasing and maintaining these vehicles. This was the reason manufacturers never considered bringing EVs in India.

Recently, the Indian government raised the taxes on Hybrid vehicles and reduced the taxes on EVs. The purpose of this action was to promote the EVs over the Hybrid vehicles. Although it seems an overambitious project, but the automobile firms are now adhering to this change and are now coming up with electric versions of their cheap cars.

Tata launched the EV versions of their Tiago. Mahindra launched their EV concept as the Aero, which was earlier shown as a diesel car in the previous Auto Expo. Jaguar also have launched their EV, called the I Pace. It’s a compact SUV, which is also a hit segment all over the world, and also it can rival Tesla in terms of technology and features. Porsche is also designing the electric vehicles under their ambitious project, Mission E.

The jump from internal combustion engines to EVs without any hybrid powertrain in between seems a bit odd, but the firms are now embracing the fact that the future is all about the electricity and the fossil fuel engines might soon be a thing of the past.
