Common-sense Self-defense Tactics and Techniques

by Filip Danic Entrepreneur
In order to properly protect yourself on the street you need to adhere to certain common-sense techniques. While they are labeled as "common-sense" you can be sure that these tactics and methods are something that one can often overlook in the heat of the moment when found in a dangerous situation. This is why it is extremely important that you do not just give in to primal instinct for survival, but rather try to think rationally about certain things that you can do in order to get out of a tough situation.

Of course, the best tactic is always to avoid conflict and it is possible to observe things to a great detail in order to do so, but sometimes this will just not be the case and one might be faced with a dangerous attacker who threatens their life. What would you do in such a situation? Let us go over some of the best strategies you should consider!

Avoid conflict and be smart

Most of the troubles people get into are a result of things we might say to the wrong person at a wrong time. Do not insult or offend people, especially those who already seem rather aggressive. Later on we will discus negotiation and you will see that is far more appealing than aggression, especially if you are outnumbered.

Keep at least one eye open

You need to be aware of everything that goes on around you as you cannot allow yourself to be caught off-guard. Keep an eye on people hanging about or passing by as well as the objects around you. No need to be paranoid, but if something does look rather suspicious you best keep both eyes open!

You are not in a movie, your objective is not victory

This is probably the worst thing that can happen to you and you might not even be aware of it. You are not in some Hollywood blockbuster film and your objective is not to defeat the other person. Your goal is to keep yourself safe and get out of the situation unharmed.

Get a pepper spray or a stun gun

You can get quality products from Your Greatest Protection online store with cheap shipping. Focus on getting either a powerful 10% pepper spray or a compact stun gun that is easy to carry around and will fit great in your pocket. Between the two the choice is yours however.

Know your limits

We often get into a mess because we refuse our pride to be broken. Getting shot, beaten up by a gang or stabbed to death is not worth it. Sometimes you should just give them all the money you have on you and those credit cards in your wallet (just cancel them once you do). Your pride isn't worth getting killed and your ultimate goal is to survive so be aware of your limits and don't act without thinking.

Negotiation is an art

Sometimes you should just try to be a good diplomat and try and come to a solution of mutual benefit to both you and the second party. Many self-defense experts will agree that negotiation is certainly a higher art from than simply fighting. If you are outnumbered or aware that the conflict would not end in your favor be prepared to compromise in their advantage if need be.

Do not be a hero

If somebody is in danger and you are the only person who can help then depending on the situation you should do everything you can, either in a diplomatic or a physical way. Either way, it is always best to try and solve the problem by calling for help and phoning the police.

Keep yourself in shape

It is understandable that you may not have the time needed to go the the gym everyday but if you can manage at least two times a week you will certainly see results. You will feel better about yourself and better prepared for any problems. In most cases you won't even be a target since you will look like somebody who will not go down easily. If you cannot go to the gym then exercise at home and buy some dumbbells to keep your arm muscles tight!
