Choosing A Kitchen Worktop

by Randy Jones Home Decorator

When you decide to renovate or remodel your kitchen design, the first thing that comes to mind is replacing the countertop and cabinets. Although an expensive option, this is very popular with homemakers and interior designers because it can provide an instant new finish to your kitchen without having for you to change its basic layout. Leaving the cabinet designs for another post, I will focus on choosing the right worktops for your kitchen. In this post we will discuss the various factors that need to be considered when you have to decide on a kitchen worktop for your place. Grab a pen and paper to make working notes:

The look-

Addressing the main purpose of renovation for majority of people, a kitchen worktop needs to be aesthetically appealing and suitable for your tastes. If you like a more earthly look, a hardwood counter would preferably be your first choice. However, if you are a cleanliness freak, stainless steel is more suitable for your kitchen. People who seek royal looks favour quartz and granite worktops over anything else. Make sure the worktop you choose goes well with the rest of your kitchen design.

Practical aspects- Now, simply having a good looking kitchen counter won’t do if you find it difficult to work around in it during your everyday kitchen excursions. Make sure you choose the right counter surface for your kitchen that would be easy for you to manage every day.

  • If you are working (professionally) and want something easy to maintain and clean, choose granite. It needs minimal care and maintenance on a regular day-to-day basis and also hardly requires any repairs over a period of time.
  • If you have heavy usage, like in a restaurant; stainless steel is more appropriate for you.
  • If you want something in a medium budget, check out wood and Corian glass options.

Remember, the counter should have sufficient heat and scratch resistant properties because hot pans and scratches are common in everyday kitchen work. Stone surfaces like granite and quartz are good for this purpose. Moreover, they have limited porosity which can be further sealed with professional sealants and polishes, so you won’t have to worry about them staining or soaking up liquid spills like wooden surfaces.

The best way to decide would be to browse through the showroom of a local supplier of kitchen worktops in Birmingham and look for yourself the various options available in the market. Do not forget your overall budget of renovation when you go out to buy.

See the overall look of the surface after installation in one of those finished-look supplier showrooms and make your choice accordingly.
