In India the ceramics industry is divided into organized and non organized sector. The organized sector has some large players. 55% of total production of ceramics comes from the organized sector. With more than 50% of total production comes from (SMEs) in Indian market they offer a large variety of article like sanitary ware, art ware, pottery, ceramics tile and stone ware pipes are some of the products which are highly in demand in Indian or in foreign.

Drive for the increase in demand for cuttings tools, structural ceramics and high-alumina ceramics over the last two decades the technical ceramics segment has seen a good growth. In 2008, with a share of 0.9% in total ceramics trade India was 24th biggest ceramic trading nation in the world. Ceramics products are greatly consumed in the construction sector. The Indian ceramic exports have been increased during the year but with the increase in exports there is also a rise in import also with China is the largest importer. China alone account for 60.7% of the total import.

The major exporter for Indian ceramics in 2008 was UAE, Saudi Arabia and Malaysia. With 30% of India ceramics export is coming from its top five major exporters.

Traditional ceramics

Traditional ceramics is the older of the two as the name suggest. The products made by the ceramics are used by the people from ancient times. Archeological excavation has also found many ceramics tiles, cups, glasses, pottery and other things which show that people were aware of the ceramics and its uses. Traditional ceramics are not supposed to meet the properties of modern day ceramics materials. Clay is commonly categorized as traditional ceramics material and they commonly consist of clay, silica and fieldspaper. The raw material which is used in traditional ceramics are china clay, ball clay, dolomite, silica, talc, calcite and nepheline and many are the common material used in the production of the traditional ceramics products. Each material forms important ingredients in the final output of the product.

Advanced ceramics

Advanced ceramics is completely different from the traditional ceramics as the preparation of ceramics powder is vital. They are mainly used for electrical, electronic, optical, and magnetic applications. The method of perpetration of ceramic powder is very costly. Chemical reactions such as Sol-gel processing and liquid-gas reactions like NH3 gas and SiCl4 liquid to produce Si3N4 are used to prepare the production of ceramic powder.

Advanced ceramic is very useful in production of material for electronic and electrical industries and many other modern day industries.
