Can I switch to a different University mid-semester in the USA?

by Martin Jacob Equip2go

If you have completed your graduation in India, you might have seen many students changing their courses for example from Mechanical engineering to computer science, or changing from one college to another or they might even change entire university after completing their 1st year in the course. A student may have several reasons to change course or college. The process may seem quite simple in domestic universities, but is it possible to change a course or university while studying abroad? Let’s see what can be the problems and whether it is advisable to change universities abroad.

Before you can actually start studying in foreign universities, you have to go through a very long process. You need to find the right college, apply for immigration processes, and then find a transcript service provider to submit your transcript certificate, medium of instruction certificate, other verified documents, a lot of academic fees, etc. After everything goes well you find yourself sitting in the classroom of your dream university studying your favourite course. It all sounds nice. But imagine for a student who is not able to adapt to the chosen university or cannot align the selected course with his professional goals? Similarly, there can be many other reasons why a student will look to change his university.

This article will help you to get all the basic information related to the change of university in the USA. Every country and every university has different policies pertaining to the transfer of college mid-term. Therefore it is highly recommended that you get in touch with your education advisor and learn about all the transfer policies related to the old and new universities. There are a few things that a student should keep in mind before applying to change university:

1.     The visa you have got for your old university may not be acceptable in the new university. So you might need to apply for a new visa for the new university.

2.     Students need to complete at least 6 months of the original course in the current university. Without completion of which, the new university may not be able to accept the transfer request.

3.     You will need to reinitiate the admission process in the new university i.e. you will have to submit the transcript certificates, academic fees, mark sheets, medium of instruction certificates, etc. in the new university as well.

4.     Usually, the fees paid in colleges are non-refundable. So it is advised that you apply for a transfer of college after 1 semester or 1 year (whatever fees you have paid) to avoid loss of money.

5.     The student might not be entitled to getting an education loan, or may not be able to apply for scholarships or grants as these might have been used for current pune university transcript.

Transfer of college mid-term is generally not recommended to students as it brings in huge loss of time, money and credits scored in the academia. International students generally opt for a 2 years course. By the time they decide to change their university, they are already about to complete 1 year in the current institute. So unless it becomes extremely important, the student should complete the 2nd year in current college as well.
