CAA Stir, How Citizens are resisting the controversial act

A lot of hue and cry was made across all political spectrum, educational institutions and the civic society, after both the houses of parliament passed the Citizenship Amendment Bill. Fear specially loomed over the minorities and the north-eastern states who are more likely to be affected with the implementation of this act. The President Ram Nath Kovind gave his assent to CAB on Thursday. On the same day, two protestors died in Guwahati and 11 suffered bullet injuries. At least 300 protestors, including activist Akhil Gogoi, were detained by the Assam Police as the violence escalated across the state. Here are latest developments and series of protests across the country against this act:

Why are minorities and the North-eastern states opposing this bill

The controversial law grants citizenship to persecuted Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists, Jains, Parsis and Christians from Bangladesh, Pakistan and Afghanistan, provided they have resided in India for six years. The cut-off date is December 31, 2014. The amended excludes Muslims from three neighbouring countries from applying for Indian citizenship. The widespread fear in the North East is that populations defined as indigenous to the region will be culturally and physically overrun by migrants as a result of this law’s provisions.

Students from premier institutions oppose the bill

In the wee hours of Monday, as many as 50 students, who were detained during protests at Jamia Milia University against the contentious act, were released.

In South Delhi, over 1,000 protesters clashed with police and at least six buses and over 50 vehicles were set alight in Mathura road, New friends colony, Jamia Nagar and Sarai Julena.

This has been the second flare-up in the capital after 27 people were detained following the clashes with police during the protest against the law last Friday outside the campus, which involved Jamia students and the localites. The standoff continued overnight and spilled over to various premier institutions including Aligarh Muslim University, Maulana Azad University and West Bengal’s Jadavpur University.
