Biogas Sector in India at a Glance

Biogas is a sustainable and great alternative to other energy resources. Its increasing popularity has shown that we can see past solar, wind, and hydropower. Companies offering biogas purification plants state that biogas has a lot to offer to the developing countries especially to those whose economies are largely agriculture-based such as India. 

Speaking of India which is a fast-developing economy that yet faces electricity supply-related challenges, biogas can answer the majority of problems. India’s dependence on fossil fuels and oil imports is an open secret. Frequent fluctuations in oil prices and the lack of balance between supply and demand upset the apple cart for India way too often. Currently, India imports oil from the middle east countries such as Saudi Arabia and Iraq. 

India has been looking for a more sustainable option that also provides stability and biogas has all the makings to be that option. It is a viable option as compressed biogas plants can be installed in rural areas and help ease India’s energy-related concerns. There is no dearth of raw materials in rural areas. Biogas requires raw materials such as animal manure, poultry litter, and crop residue among others. It might come as a surprise to many, but biogas is not to India. National Biogas and Manure Management Program (NBMMP) that started in the 70s to curb India’s energy concerns originally aimed at reducing India’s dependence on fossil products. 

Despite the NBMMP program India failed to produce as much biogas it is capable of. Currently, it produces only 2.07 billion m3 per annum when it is capable of producing 48 billion m3 per annum. 

Companies providing biogas cleaning system says India can take a leaf out of China’s book to see a massive boost in biogas production. China worked with a crystal-clear strategy of promoting biogas production in rural areas which did the trick for them in a small time span.
