He was a basically a leather tanner who was trying to use the writing tools to write on leather products which was impossible by means of then fountain pen. He used a small rotating ball in the tips held by a socket. Although it was good enough for writing the stuffs on leather products, it could not be successful to write on the paper. That is why; the technology was a business failure invented by John Loud.
