Avocado Mattress Review

by Sleep Sherpa Sleep Expert

The Avocado Mattress is a welcome addition to the natural mattress marketplace. It looks and feels great but also is affordable and eco-friendly, it is also available in a vegan option. With 100% natural latex, 100% GOTS organic certified wool & cotton and up to 1,414 support coils and a price of $1,399 for a queen and another $400 for the pillow top option, it’s a great buy. It’s nice to see a natural mattress enter the online mattress space at such a competitive price.

Overview of the Avocado Mattress

This mattress received excellent ratings by Consumer Reports for the last 2 years. This is a very sought after achievement.  The quality is definitely there.

Here’s a quick video that explains the main features of this mattress. Overall its a really good value considering all the materials you get.

Construction of the Avocado Bed

Below are the construction details as listed on the Avocado website.

Top Layer

The top layer consists of hand-tufted Joma wool rosettes on top of an organic cotton cover. This tufting process makes the bed look amazing but also is used because you don’t need to use a glue to hold the pieces of the mattress together.

Middle layers

The pillow top consists of a 2-inch latex layer followed by another 2 inches of latex below that for a total of 4 inches of dunlop latex.

Base Layer

The base of the mattress is made of individual 16 gauge pocket coils split into 3 zones so that you get proper support where you need it.

Avocado Bed Certifications

Avocado is one of the greenest mattresses in the marketplace. Below are thier certifications as listed on their website.

Every Avocado mattress and pillow is GREENGUARD Gold Certified by UL Environment. It means they’re scientifically tested to meet some of the world’s most rigorous emissions standards for chemical exposure and pollutants, such as volatile organic compounds (VOCs), formaldehyde and phthalates.

Our 100% natural latex is sourced from tree-tapped and sustainable latex sources in India. (FYI: Latex trees do not grow in the United States). Our latex is grown using only organic fertilizers. The finished latex is tested and certified for hazardous emissions by the eco-INSTITUT® — an international product testing and quality assurance company — by our provider, LIEN A. The eco-INSTITUT evaluates the latex for an extensive list of chemicals including:formaldehyde, VOCS (volatile organic compounds), heavy metals, pesticides, phthalates, and other potentially harmful chemicals.

The STANDARD 100 by OEKO-TEX® is a worldwide consistent, independent testing and certification system for textile products at all processing levels. Our wool provider, JOMA Wool of New Zealand, adheres to the strict OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certification to ensure human and ecological safety. This certifies that our wool is free from allergenic dyes, pesticides, chlorinated phenols, heavy metals, formaldehyde, chloro-organic carriers and has a pH that’s not harmful to the skin.

Free from harmful chemicals, organic cotton is better for your health and the people growing it. Organic cotton is also a more sustainable and ethical option, instead of conventional cotton. We’re proud that our cotton is certified by the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS). The cotton used in our ticking is sourced from our partner in South India, Bannari Amman Spinning Mills (fun fact: their facility is powered by windmills), then finished at our textile manufacturing processing center in Charlotte, North Carolina.

1% for the Planet® is a global organization that connects dollars and doers to address the most pressing issues facing our planet. Started in 2002 by Yvon Chouinard, founder of Patagonia, and Craig Mathews, founder of Blue Ribbon Flies, member organizations have given more than $150 million to environmental nonprofits to date. As members of 1% for the Planet, we are fully committed to giving 1% of our corporate revenues to verified environmental nonprofits — to help protect the environment and give back to our global community.

GREEN BUSINESS STANDARDS
Green America® awards Green Business Certifications to companies and organizations that meet or exceed their standards for social and environmental responsibility. They certify companies that are committed to using business as a platform for social change, operating in a “value-based” and environmentally responsible manner.

The latex used is 100% natural. I didn’t find any mention of GOLS (Global Organic Latex Standard) though.

The wool is 100% GOTS organic certified wool sourced from India

The coils also have a sustainable story in that they are made with recycled steel.

The cotton is 100% GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) certified.

Avocado Bed With or Without Pillowtop?

If you’re trying to decide between the Avocado with or without the pillow top. Here’s a detailed explanation from Avocado about the differences between the two:

On our standard Avocado mattress, we use two seamless layers of Dunlop latex: 2 inches in the comfort layer (D75 / 24-28 ILD, soft); and a denser 1-inch layer (D95, firm) as a core base component under the innerspring support coil unit.

On the Avocado Mattress with the optional Pillow-Top, we use three seamless layers of Dunlop latex — 2 inches in the Euro-top layer (D75 / 24-28 ILD, soft), 2 more inches in the comfort layer (D75 / 24-28 ILD, soft), and a denser 1-inch layer (D95 / 36-38 ILD, firm) as a core base component. No blended or synthetic latex is used, and there are no seams to break down over time and no chemical adhesives are used between the comfort layers.

The Avocado Vegan Mattress Option

If you want to go with the Vegan option of the mattress they just switch the wool for cotton:

Our vegan mattress features 100% natural latex rubber, 100% GOTS certified organic cotton and up to 1,414 pocketed support coils. No polyurethane foams or toxic fire retardants. It’s exactly the same as our Avocado Green Mattress, but uses cotton instead of wool.

How Much Does the Avocado Mattress Cost?

Price depends on whether or not you go with or without the pillow top option. The price will be the same whether or not you choose the regular or vegan option. Below are the current prices.

My Avocado Mattress Findings

The Avocado has a medium firm feel. However because it is tufted, you get more of a true pillow top feel. With many latex mattresses, you get a flat feel with more or less sink depending on what type of latex is used. The tufting makes a significant difference here.

Here’s a video illustrating bounce on the Avocado mattress. It has quite a bit of bounce:

Another plus for this mattress is the edge support. Usually, all latex mattresses sink a little at the edge but because this mattress has a coil system as well, you get the benefit of added edge support so that you can use all of the mattresses and sleep right up to the edge without feeling like you will fall off.

Aside from the hand tufting, this mattress also has stitched handles that make it easy to rotate or transport.

Since the Avocado is made with latex and quality springs. According to Avocado, the weight limit is  350 lbs. per person, or 700 lbs. in total.

Another common question is whether or not the Avocado Bed is Vegan. And, yes, you can get a vegan option for this mattress. The vegan option replaces the wool layer with cotton.

The Avocado Bed Warranty

You can find detailed information on the Avocado Mattress on their website here. Avocado offers a 25-year warranty. Here are some of the high-level details of the warranty.

YEARS 1-10: FULL COVERAGE — NON-PRORATED

During the first ten (10) years of the Limited Warranty, Avocado Mattress will not charge purchaser to repair or replace purchaser’s mattress if it qualifies under the Limited Warranty. This period is non-prorated which means that we don’t charge you a percentage of the repair costs or replacement product based on the amount of time you slept on the mattress prior to noticing a defect.

YEARS 11-25: LIMITED COVERAGE — PRORATED

During years 11-25 of this 25-Year Limited Warranty Avocado Mattress will, at its option, replace the mattress at a prorated charge to the purchaser plus transportation and/or shipping charges. The prorated replacement charged will be dependent on the year that the mattress is replaced.

The Avocado Pillow

Avocado sells natural pillows made out of latex and kapok. These pillows have the same organic cotton cover as the mattress and can be adjusted to the perfect fit. Here’s a quick video overview of the Avocado Pillow.
