by Dynamix Group Writer

Are you planning a trip to Goa? Why not visit the place when it evokes scintillating music and vibrant colours all around. Lavish and extravagant parties, casinos and 5 star hotels in Goa are not the only things to explore. In the month of March, the destination turns into a magical paradise. This is because that’s when the historic and lively Goa Carnival Festival takes place. Along with the carnival, the Goan spirit comes alive and the residents start making arrangements. Every year, the carnival is celebrated and tourists from various corners look forward to this four-day-long festival.

The Goa Carnival

Despite being one of the smallest festivals in the world, Goa carnival is the largest carnival in India.  The carnival was introduced by the Portuguese in the 18th-century, and today, it has become the biggest festival in Goa. If you are unaware of what happens in the carnival, here are a few things you need to know:

Saturday Parade

The Carnival commences with a massive parade in the evening. It is led by King Momo, surrounded by dancers, musicians, vendors, women, and older men in comical clothes. Fire-eaters, acrobats, clowns, brass bands, jesters, and many others also follow the king during the parade. The parade moves through the main street of Panaji, Mapusa, Margao, and Vasco.

The Red and Black Dance

Enjoy dancing? Well, the parade is the ideal place you can dance your heart out. Dress up in a red and black outfit, with your masks on and dance all night away with the bands, fire-eaters and other performers. However, there will be a huge crowd following the parade. If you don’t mind the crowd, you will have a very exciting and vibrant moment. The biggest attraction of the carnival is crowning of King Momo, which is then followed by drinking, dancing, and lots of music. The festivities continue till late into the night before the dawn of Ash Wednesday, which is the start of Lent.

What is so special here?

Khell or Fell is a one-act that the folk plays. It is the speciality of the carnival. When the carnival reaches Chandor, walking-actors go around the village singing Intruzachim Geetam or Fella-Gitam along with playing musical instruments. The unique symphony produced by combining the sound of drums, violins, ghumats, a Goan percussion instrument and cymbals, creates a very magical aura that soaks the air.

While you are in Goa, you should attend this carnival at least once. Book some nice private beach hotel in Goa and spend a few quality days there.
