Are Silica Gel Safe for Human Use?

by Cilicant In Cilicant
Any chemical product is termed either safe or unsafe for human consumption. Before using any new product whether for personal or public use, it is always very important to ensure that you know where it lies. If it is not safe for human use, it is of necessity to have all the rules pertaining it and keep it as far as possible from human reach. This means, you will only use when and where necessary. It should also be used according to strictly laid out rules.

On the other hand, products that are safe for human use feel safe to have around. Although some might have some serious side effects if not used well, the fact that they are not fatal makes things better. Desiccant Silica Gel for Medical Use is safe for use but just like any other chemical products, it should be used cautiously. Desiccant Silica Gel for Medical Use have become an important part of pharmaceutical products as far as absorbing moisture is concerned. The Desiccants for Moisture Control are however not part of the active ingredients of the pharmaceutical products. They are mainly used in the packaging to absorb moisture and keep the product in good condition.

Is Silica Gel Harmful
Although Desiccant Silica Gel for Medical Use is non-toxic, it is a choking hazard and especially if you have small children around. This is the reason why, all the silica gel packets have a “Do not eat” warning on them. This is usually there to safeguard you from getting chocked. It is however important to understand that some companies decide to coat Desiccants for Moisture Control in cobalt chloride. This is what makes the silica gel desiccant a toxic product. Since they don’t indicate which pack has cobalt chloride and which doesn’t, it is important to keep off from silica gel.

In case someone accidently eats silica gel coated with cobalt chloride, they will either vomit or get nauseated. If you are keen to check, there is a difference between silica gels that are free of cobalt chloride and those that are coated. This is because, cobalt chloride is dark blue in color but when it is saturated in water, it turns pink. However, Desiccant Silica Gel for Medical Use or those used in consumer products are not cobalt-chloride coated.

Conclusion
Although Desiccants for Moisture Control are not toxic, it is important to adhere to the rule of not eating it. It can have chocking effects on both adults and children.
