Are Air Compressor Oil And Motor Oil Interchangeable?

Different types of oil have various purposes, and one of the most widely-used greases is the air compressor oil. Many times, however, people also use motor oil in its place as it seems to get the job done as well. Because of this, a lot of people tend to think that the two are interchangeable, and that in turn, you can use air compressor oil to lubricate an engine in the place of motor oil. I’s important to note, however, that these are still different oils with different uses for them. 

Air-compressor oil, which is typically a synthetic oil, does not contain the same detergents that are found in motor oil that are in charge of preventing the formation of sludge. This is because air-compressor oil is manufactured specifically for the purpose of lubricating the ball bearings inside a compressor. With that, its formulation is specifically just meant to create a smoother-running environment in a compressor. Its synthetic nature also helps reduce carbon deposits within the air compressor.

Motor oil, meanwhile, is meant to create a barrier between an engine’s moving parts in order to prevent friction and wear. It’s also meant to cushion any impact that the engine might experience. With that, this type of oil is more absorbent and more likely to conduct heat and distribute it away from hot engine parts.

While it is technically alright to use motor oil in some air compressors, air compressor oil is not recommended to be used in motor engines. In that sense, they are not interchangeable completely. Moreover, while motor oil can be used as a substitute for air compressor oil, it is not best to go to it as a first choice as its formulation is meant for something else.
