Appetite for a New Design: Spare Room Remodeling

by Emma L. Business consultant

Having a bigger house means that you can always count on having some rooms that are going to go unused at a certain point. You’ve probably wondered how you can put those spare rooms to good use. Maybe you already have them but use them to store unnecessary items. Whatever the case may be, we’re bringing you some interesting ideas that you can use to turn your spare room into something that’s actually useful and practical:

Transform it into a personal gym

Shedding a few extra pounds can be tough, but it’s even more demotivating when you have to actually walk to the gym. If you have some empty space waiting to be used, why not transform it into a home gym? It’s a very convenient, inexpensive solution that can be made simply by introducing some second-hand equipment like treadmills, weights and a bicycle to your room. Lay down some mats, add some mirrors and voila – you’re ready to become a fitter and healthier version of yourself in the comfort of your own home.

Design your own dressing room

Give your room a makeover by turning it into a place where you can do makeovers! Install shelves and rods for an open-concept, walk-in closet in which you can display all your nice bags, shoes and clothes. Vary the sizes of the shelves and drawers to make everything fit. For an aesthetically pleasing look, add a tufted ottoman and a chandelier to your dressing room and make yourself feel like a true diva. If you have some extra space, consider including a makeup station with a vanity mirror to give it that glamorous Hollywood touch.

If you’re all business – build a home office!

If you’re someone who brings their work home or you have a work-from-home kind of job, building a home office is a logical choice in order to use that extra space. Your home office should include practical office furniture such as spacious shelves, filing cabinets, a nice-looking desk and of course, a comfortable, height-adjustable chair. You want it to look organized but at the same time personal and comfortable. Therefore, consider adding something meaningful to you such as frames with pictures, artwork and a vase of favorite flowers to make it feel homely.

Build a multi-purpose guest room

It’s always a good idea to have a guest room in case your friends come to visit. But why not take advantage of that guest room when the guests aren’t around? By being creative and installing some practical furniture, you can even get yourself a room that doubles as a lounge and a home theater when not used by the guests. Consider buying some stylish foldable furniture, such as sofa beds and sleeper chairs. Arrange them in a way you would arrange a living room – place them in front of the TV and add a coffee table in the center. To make it more comfortable, add a nice, warm rug and some plants to make it more lively and cozy.

Parenting done right – give your kids a playroom

Kids are always looking for new, exciting adventures, so why not give them one using your spare room? Let your imagination run wild – decorate it together with your children. Paint the walls their favorite colors, add a lot of toys and comfy rugs. Install shelves and decorate with some cute wallpapers. Introduce some toy storage, colorful chairs, art tables and chalkboard walls – that way, you don’t have to worry about them ‘decorating’ your living room walls and furniture since they will be spending so much time in their new, colorful playroom.

Have some fun – turn it into a game room

If there are some adults in your house that like playing as much as children, consider turning your spare room into a game room. Great for entertaining guests, it also makes a good place to unwind together with your family after a long day. Place a pool table or add a ping pong table, depending on your preferences. Purchasing a pinball machine and a dart board will certainly make it an excellent game room full of options. To top it all off, install dimmable ceiling lights in order to emulate the experience of a typical game room.

There are so many ways you can transform a spare room so don’t let that extra square footage go to waste. Be creative, see what works best for you and start building! Regardless of the idea that you decide to go with, that spare room will be put to good use while providing you with a functional and practical space to spend your time in.
