An Overview On Traditional Upholstery

by Peter J. Blogger
Upholstery is the job of giving furniture particularly seats with springs, padding, leather, webbing or fabric covers. The word comes from the term upholder. It is very much applicable to automobile, domestic, boat and airplane furniture and can also be applied to mattresses especially the upper layers. Thus there are different kinds of upholstery like traditional upholstery, commercial upholstery, marine upholstery and automobile upholstery. A person working with upholstery is known as upholsterer. Here we are going to discuss about traditional upholstery.

Traditional upholstery is basically a craft that evolved over centuries for covering and padding chairs, sofas and seats. It involves the use of lashings, springs, grasses, wools, stuffings of animal hair, scrims and a lot more all built by hand.

In middle ages, the domestic interiors were playing a big role and upholstery was having an essential part in the interior décor. The décor consisted primarily of what we now consider as the soft furnishings. By the start of the seventeenth century, the chair seats were already being padded but it was fairly basic. All kinds of stuffings from grass, sawdust, feathers and grass were used . The stuffings were heaped in wooden platforms and held in a place  with decorative nails and fabric. The result was it produced a dome shaped sloping towards seat.

At the end of seventeenth century the upholsterers started to develop the strategies, which would shape and distribute the stuffing into controlled shapes. The curled horsehair were used more for stuffing. The layers if the stuffings could be evenly distributed. The squab cushions were made a lot more stable using the tufting ties. The stuffed edge rolls appeared on the front seats giving support to the cushions.

What we think today as classic upholstery techniques and shapes flourished in the eighteenth century. The frames were matched by professionally executed upholstery. The technical knowledge of the upholsters meant that stuffings can be controlled along the sloping lines offering new comfort levels and elegance. Border was basically replaced afterwards in the century by a single piece linen taken over the stuffed seat tacked to frame.

In Victorian age, excessive padding and stuffing became popular. The upholstered furniture that were available had high quality steel springs. Edges were shaped into rolls, fabrics could be folded into padded shapes but stuffings became a lot more complex.
