An Overview of Reasonable Time-Sharing Schedule Arrangement

by David L Martin Law Offices of David L. Martin, Esq. PC

One of the most important things to follow in your child’s life after your divorce is your time-sharing schedule arrangement with your ex. In New York, parents who have joint physical custody must make a parenting plan outlining how their child will spend time with each parent.

Most Nassau County divorce attorneys recommend parents consider reasonable time-sharing. Reasonable time-sharing is often used by parents who share joint custody and can co-parent and communicate amicably with one another. This schedule arrangement can indicate that the parents make their own parenting plan or adjust the plan as they go. Of course, all agreements must be in the child’s best interests.

Reasonable time-sharing schedule arrangement allows parents to change dates to accommodate work trips, holidays, or their child’s needs. It makes it easier for some families to plan their lives around rather than having set visitation dates. It can also be based on the child’s immediate needs, making it easier for parents to think about their time-sharing in relation to their child’s growth and development. This arrangement also makes co-parenting easier because parents will already be communicating about schedules and everything going on in their child’s life.

Keep in mind that maintaining a good relationship with your ex is essential for a reasonable time-sharing schedule arrangement. If you cannot maintain an amicable and cooperative relationship with your ex, it will be impossible to sustain this setup.

Both parents must agree on the same parenting plan for reasonable time-sharing agreements to survive. If the agreement fails, you will need to modify your child custody order to create a specific schedule. The set schedule may resolve time-sharing disputes and prevent future conflicts, which will eventually benefit your child.
