All you should know about Polyaspartic Floor coatings

by Carol Gilbertus Manager
Every now and then you hear about various inventions for your home and office décor or something new for your garage flooring and outdoors. When you hear something about really amazing, it becomes hard for you to believe and becoming skeptical about it is quite obvious. Lets’ talk about the latest trend in flooring for garages; it is the new floor coating for concrete flooring known as polyaspartic polyurea. Polyaspartic garage floor coatings are nowadays in trend because this material has lot of good qualities and advantages over other materials. Some of the advantages are:

It remains unaffected by temperature and can be applied at any temperature range
It adheres very easily to any type of concrete floor or surface
It regains full strength within half an hour of its application.
It has enough flexibility to cover up small cracks
Once it is set it can withstand wide range of temperature fluctuation.
It is stain resistance
It is UV resistance.

It is really hard to believe that one material or one mixture can have so many good qualities altogether and there is something superior then designer epoxy flooring. It’s true but there is always the other side of the coin and same is the case here with the polyaspartic polyurea. It’s not that there are some cons associated with this flooring but there are some conditions and pre-requisites for this type of flooring to be extremely successful. Before knowing about the conditions lets know more about this material.

What is Polyaspartic? Polyaspartic is a kind of polyurea which is aliphatic in nature. Polyurea was first developed as a usable material in 1980s by the Texaco Chemical Company. Since then the polyurea has been used for coating and repairing material. Polyurea is corrosion resistant with good tensile strength. The main precaution which has be taken while using the Polyaspartic is that it has to be handled very carefully. Its application has to be very quick because it has very short pot life of only about 3-4 seconds.

The polyaspartic garage floor coatings are dual-part material systems. It means that a resin has to be added to it along with a catalyst to cease the chemical reaction which hardens the material too quickly. Also because it has a very short pot life the two parts mixed quickly at the spray tip to avoid hardening and this require lots of maintenance and expensive equipments.

Also special precautions have to be taken before prepare the floor, which are as follows:

The concrete surface which has to be coated should not have too high moisture vapor release rate.

The liquid and solid content of the polyaspartic should be mixed in proper proportions so that concrete surface is allowed to wet properly and there is proper bond between the concrete and the polyaspartic coating.

When all the precautions are kept in mind and the polyaspartic garage floor coatings are very successful and durable.  This is the reason it has been a better option over designer epoxy coating and others.
