What is a contra rotary mixer?

As the name suggests, contra mixer works by contra rotation and beating of blades. It has diverse uses, like in the pharmaceutical, cosmetic, food and other industries. It mixes, blends, emulsifies, removes air and distributes materials of various thickness and textures. It results in the formation of a liquid-solid paste that has various purposes. To ensure uniform mixing, the machine involves laminar thinning.

It is used for the intensive mixing of various substances and particles that one may need in the industry, ones that most mixers will fail to contain. Working principle:

There are two blades in the mixer, rotating clockwise and anti-clockwise simultaneously. There are two shafts as well, one hollow while the other is solid. The solid shaft accompanied by multiple blades rotates in the clockwise direction while the other hollow shaft with the anchor scrapper blade assembly goes in the anti-clockwise direction. When the contra rotary motion of two different blades has a high-speed homogenizer, it assists in intimate and homogeneous mixing of products. The mixers come jacketed and are thus provided with a vacuum pump, heating arrangement, etc.

A good contra rotary mixer usually comprises of the following components:

·      It is very efficient in combining both liquid and solid particles into a paste/gel

·      The set of blades are properly positioned against each other to give the right turbulence for mixing

·      There are options for charging materials; it may be by open cover or by vacuum feed

·      The largest of quantities of material are sucked by the vacuum

·      The shaft is usually supported by a heavy-duty bearing housing with mechanical seals

·      The bottom discharge valve has the option of an extra CIP and is pneumatically operated.
