All about IR night vision devices

by Pradeep S. Digital Marketing Strategist
Night vision devices, which were once developed for use in the military, have become almost a household name. From houses to vehicles to entertainment, the technology is being used everywhere. Night vision devices can be expensive but help in various ways when used and cared for properly.

A night vision device or camera is an optical device that uses infrared radiation to make it possible for images to be taken in total darkness. IR night vision devices were first used in World War II and also in the Vietnam War. The technology has greatly developed since then and today, there are different types of night vision devices available and are used depending upon the place and need.

Understanding night vision devices:

An IR night vision device or camera is available in various forms. Night vision devices are developed using a technology called image enhancement that allows seeing in complete darkness with the help of infrared radiation. They come in the form of cameras, goggles, handheld scopes, or other different instruments.

Night vision devices work with the help of this image enhancement technology and rely on a special tube called image intensifier that collect and amplify infrared and visible light. When a conventional lens gathers visible light and maybe some IR radiation, this light is sent to the image intensifier tube which converts the light energy into electrons. In this tube, the electrons are multiplied when similar electrons are released from atoms in the tube. These electrons hit a phosphor-coated screen at the end of the tube and maintain their position which provides a perfect image. The green image on the screen is created by these phosphors and can be then viewed through an ocular lens that allows magnification of the image.

Night vision devices have gone through stages since its invention, marked by ‘generations’. While Generation 0 was the beginning, what we now have is a highly developed Generation 4. Generation 4 devices are expensive but if properly cared for, will last a lifetime.

Applications of an IR night vision device:

Though the original purpose of a night vision device was to locate enemies at night, today it is used for a variety of things. Some common applications of a night vision device include military- where the device is used to locate and target enemies even in the dark, law enforcement- where it is used to find out objects hidden by criminals, including drugs, money, explosives, etc., hunting- to locate animals during night-time hunting adventures, wildlife observation- for remaining undetected yet getting a clear view when observing wildlife at night, surveillance and security- that have become the most popular use of night vision devices in the present times, with hidden and security cameras mostly using this technology, navigation- to discern directions in the dark, and of course, entertainment.
