All about Food Packaging Equipment

by Jhonson Smith Process Plant Network, the complete package
The food manufacturing industry is not just limited to manufacturing food that is tasty, healthy and long lasting. Apart from processing the food in a hygienic manner, careful attention also needs to be paid to how the final food product will be packaged. Indeed, the enhanced durability of today’s processed food products necessitates proper packaging as this is what will ultimately determine the shelf life of the product!

And this brings us to the food packaging equipment. Today’s manufacturers are literally inundated with a mind boggling range of packaging machinery that can meet almost any kind of need and then some more. But why the diverse variety in food packaging equipment you may wonder?
Well, to begin with, proper packaging is essential to store, protect and preserve the food product. How will chips stay fresh and crisp if not packaged in an appropriate vacuum package with a sachet packing machine? How will juice be made available to the customer if it’s not filled in a tetra pack? Will biscuits not break if they are not packed appropriately? And so on…

Then, the food product also needs to be packaged so that it can be safely transported and distributed everywhere. It also serves another functional benefit of informing the customer. The packaging labels will carry all information right from the product name and brand to ingredients to manufacturing and expiry dates to the selling price of the product. Bar coding and batch information is also included as well.

Packaging occurs in different levels on the product. The primary packaging is in direct contact with the food product and is used to physically protect and hold the item. The next layer may be used to group similar primary packages together and is optional. Tertiary packaging is generally considered essential for ease in handling, transporting and storing the food product – like cartons, containers, etc.

It follows that there are different types of packaging machinery to meet different kinds of needs – like fillers, bottlers, cappers, horizontal form fill and vertical form fill machines, shrink wrappers, stretch wrappers, tray, tub and cup sealing machines, sachet packing machine, vacuum packaging machine and many more other types. Then there are labelers, sorters, counters, cartoners, strappers, case loaders and still more.

As a processed food manufacturer, you have to determine the right kind of packaging equipment that will meet the needs of your particular product. Then again, one type of machinery can be put to different uses as well.

When it comes to purchase, any piece of machinery can be purchased in new condition or a used model or even a hybrid combination of old and new equipment depending on what suits your specific needs. Else, you have the option of getting custom designed machinery to suit your specific operations.
Therefore, you can safely package any liquid, solid or even powder in different ways from boxes and bags to tins, packets or bottles!
