Additional Safety Around Doors for Children!

by Safety Assured Find Best Door Safety Products

In places like a playhouse, daycare centres, and schools, the well-being of children should always be your number one priority. According to the USA’s National Safety Council, there are approximately three hundred thousand door-related accidents each year that require emergency treatment. One thing that you need to know is that according to these statistics, children under the age of four are the most vulnerable to such accidents, and in most cases, these injuries require amputation.

Safety experts have estimated that more than 90 per cent of the total injuries sustained in a daycare centre could have easily been prevented through better safety prevention and awareness.

This is why it is vital for commercial institutions such as pre-school, daycare centres, and other firms that facilitate small children to take the required safety measures wherever needed to prevent any accident from occurring.

Even though these accidents may cause significant reputational and financial loss to the business, more importantly, it can be a traumatic experience for the child and may even cause lifelong issues.

The British Association of Plastic & Reconstructive surgeons has released a comprehensive report that shows the lifelong effect of a finger-trapping accident. Professionals said that fingertip injury by itself can result in loss of 20% of hand strength and can prevent children from pursuing their choice of career.

It is common to find an automatic door closer already installed in a primary school or a daycare centre. These door closers are made to slow down any slammed door to help prevent such finger-trapping accidents from happening. Nevertheless, these door closers only protect the children from the handle side of your door, and most door trapping injuries often occur from the hinge side of the door.

Case study

In 2014 a child from Virginia, US, trapped one of her fingers in the hinge side of a door at school. The five-year-old pretended to be a classroom door holder when one of her hands got caught in the steel door, which amputated a part of her finger. Luckily, ER doctors were able to act quickly and re-attached the fingertip without many complications.

However, the young child’s family were left in the dark by the institution about whether or not the school would be able to cover the total cost of the medical bills – which, fortunately for this case, the insurance company did. In 2 such instances in which the doctors were able to re-attach the finger correctly, the settlements had hefty price tags of $600,000 (about £425,000) and $725,000 (about £500,000).

The solution? Finger guards for doors.

Door finger trapping accidents can be prevented easily by getting finger guards for doors installed as soon as possible. These guards are designed to fit perfectly on the hinge side of a door to eliminate the chances of a hinge-trapping accident.

These commercial door finger guards do not affect the appearance of your property, can be installed easily without any effort, and do not change the way your door works. You can find out more about these finger guards at your nearest child safety centres in children’s hospitals and your local hardware store.
