A Refresher on Compact Laminates

by PRIYA P. designer Interior and exterior
The surfacing material used in the interiors and the exteriors of a building have a significant impact on the nature of its appearance. A high quality and attractive looking surfacing material can augment the aesthetic appeal of a building to a great extent, while a damaged looking surfacing material radiates an uninviting aura. In order to ensure that the attractive appearance of a building stays in perfect shape for decades, it is important to choose a surfacing material that is eye-catching and is able to effectively withstand the daily wear and tear as well.

Most of the contemporary architects recommend using compact laminates as a surfacing material for both the interior and exterior surfaces of a building. These elegant looking laminates are extremely sturdy in their make and can be used for both vertical and horizontal applications, which makes them a good choice for a surfacing material. Compact laminates are manufactured under strict process control parameters. Decorative surface sheets are first soaked in melamine resins and then pressed over core Kraft paper sheet to make these laminates. They are bonded further with the help of thermosetting resins under high temperature and pressure.  Due to their extensive process of manufacturing, compact laminates become one of the most stable and durable types of surfacing material.

Compact laminates carry multiple exceptional qualities. Some of them are:
  • They can  be installed quite easily with the help of mechanical fasteners or aluminum moldings
  • They are absolutely non-toxic and therefore perfectly safe for use for interior surfaces
  • They do not rot or freeze
  • They are not prone to cultivate mildew, spores or fungi

The two grades in which compact laminates for home surfaces can be found are:

  • Interior Grade: These laminates are essentially made from solid grade high-pressure compact laminates, which are of premium quality and provides them with high durability. These interior laminates can be found in a variety of texture and colors. They are the perfect surfacing material for adding a contemporary urbane look at one’s home surfaces. The interior grade laminates manufactured by the renowned companies of the country are resistant to moisture, corrosion, microbial threats and high impact. They are even available in a fire retardant variety which makes them suitable for application on kitchen surfaces.
  • Exterior Grade: These laminates are produced with the help of specialized chemicals and by the use of the groundbreaking GLE technology. Due to this technology, the exterior grade laminates are highly resistant to extreme weather conditions, moisture, fading, microbial threats, and fire. The exterior grade laminates manufactured by the renowned companies of the country also carry anti-graffiti properties which makes them a perfectly suited material for the exterior surfaces of urban buildings where graffiti’s are a huge headache for the homeowners. These laminates are available in a variety of bold colors, which helps them to elevate the aesthetic appeal of a building and provides them with an eye-catching finish.

These two varieties of compact laminates can be found at any trusted and renowned company that specializes in manufacturing and providing surfacing materials. One should always purchase compact laminates that have the Greenguard, PEFC and FSC certifications, in order to ensure their premium quality and longevity.
