A Family Adventure at Kedarkantha Trek

by Giselle Lobo Writer & Blogger

After booking everything, I told my family to pack up their best trekking stuff and get ready to go. I bought and packed all the necessary gear and equipment recommended by our guide. We set forth on our journey the next day after reaching our starting point in Sankri. We weren’t familiar with the Kedarkantha trek route, and we booked our trek with an agency to be safe.

I found mid-February to March beginning the best time to go for the Kedarkantha trek. Those months weren’t as cold as December and January. Everybody loves snow, and I wasn’t sure if I would find any in February, but we got a lot of snow. We were lucky enough to get snowfall for two days. We were sliding in the snow with kids while descending, which might not have been possible in late March.

We took the route from Sankri to Juda ka Talab which stays crowded throughout the seasons. Our Kedarkantha trek route starting from Sankri, was the best way to feel close to nature. We reached our basecamp via Juda ka Talab which was clean and beautiful.

The route was beautiful in its unique way. The trail was rocky for some kilometers and covered with pine and other forests for the rest. Juda ka Talab added a different charm to the place. We had a great time there like everybody else. The pictures beside the frozen lake landed exceptionally beautiful than the rest of the spots.

We didn’t camp at Juda ka Talab and moved forward. I found that trek very popular among trekkers. That whole trek was moderately difficult for us. We went further to the Kedarkantha base camp and slept through the night. The cold and fresh breeze helped us sleep throughout the somber night sky.

We started our Kedarkantha trek at the crack of dawn. We weren’t feeling lazy due to the extreme excitement to see the sunrise at the top of the mountain, right in the middle of nature. We looked around us and found other trekkers like us moving towards the destination with the motivation to see the sunrise.

When we reached the top, it felt like an accomplishment. Our guide pointed to all the peaks like Rupin Range, Buran Range, Swargarohini, Kalanag, Bandarpoonch, and the Har Ki Dun Valley that we could see from there. We were in the middle of bluish-white hills and a lot of flora. The vegetation we saw on the way was the slightest of what we from the bird’s eye view.

Before descending, we took some more clips and pictures as a memory of completing the Kedarkantha trek successfully. It had been my best adventure trekking on a different landscape than steep mountains. It was a delight to watch the whole family experience something beautiful together.
