Not being able to give birth to a child of our own is considered as a huge deficiency, especially for a woman. Not only does it affect socially, but also psychologically. But, thanks to the development of technology, one can conceive despite having anatomical difficulties. One of the technological advancements which help individuals overcome infertility is IVF.

IVF stands for in-vitro fertilization. It is a type of assisted reproductive technology which makes the process of fertilization more feasible.

IVF treatment is a process of fertilization where the sperm meets the egg outside the woman’s womb. Once the fusion takes place, the embryo is placed into the womb. The doctor then keeps a careful watch on the foetus, to monitor its growth and development.

In what cases is IVF treatment used?

IVF is an assisted reproductive technique (ART), which means that this mode of treatment can only be used to assist the process of fertilization and not make the sperms or eggs viable. This means that if an individual is infertile due to some defect in the gametes, these procedures will not help.

IVF treatment can be used to treat infertility in the following cases:

          •        Ovulation disorders: in conditions where the number of eggs available is less or the frequency of ovulation is reduced, IVF plays an important role in fertilization.

          •        Damage to fallopian tube: the fallopian tube is the organ which carries the egg to the cervix. It is also the location where fertilization takes place. so, when there is an obstruction in the fallopian tube, fertilization will be hindered. In such cases, IVF acts as a boon by allowing fertilization to take place.

          •        Endometriosis: this is a condition where the endometrial lining starts forming around the ovaries, fallopian tubes and the uterus. Endometrial lining is a dense, vascular, nutritive layer that forms on the uterine wall, preparing the womb for implantation. But in some cases, the lining is formed in surrounding regions as well. In such cases, the IVF procedures may help in conception.

          •        Tubectomy or tubal ligation: this is a procedure which prevents pregnancy permanently. In this procedure, the fallopian tubes are ligated so that fertilization does not happen. If the patient who has already undergone this procedure, and decides that she would like to conceive, this is the perfect option for her.

          •        Defective sperm production: many assume that IVF is a procedure which only applies to the women. But, in reality, there are many infertility conditions where the males are affected. One such condition is the reduced or defective sperm production. In such cases, IVF can be of great help.

          •        Cryopreservation in case of cancer or other health conditions: in patients who are undergoing treatment such as radiation therapy or chemotherapy, there are risks of complete infertility. In such patients, the eggs are frozen and preserved and eventually, IVF is performed for conception.

          •        Genetic planning: those parents who have chances of genetic transfer of disorders can screen the foetus, after IVF, for genetic transfer of disorders.

IVF treatment procedure:

For the course of the treatment, the patient is first given medication which will increase the number of fertile eggs that are released per cycle. This increases the chances of fertilization by and large. This process is called ovulation induction.

Next, the patient’s eggs are collected at the IVF treatment centre through a minor procedure. This stage is called egg retrieval.

In the next stage, the laboratory fertilization is carried out where the eggs are mixed with donor sperms. This is called artificial insemination. The egg is now fertilized and is ready for implantation.

A couple of embryos are placed back into the patient’s womb for implantation and normal growth of the foetus.

What is the cost of IVF treatment?

The IVF treatment cost varies from person to person and from one place to another. The cost of IVF treatment in India is much lower than the cost in western countries. At the same time, the quality of the treatment is also maintained at high standards. Medical tourism has been one of the most prevalent fields in medicine, mainly due to the stark contrast in the prices of treatment. In most of the cases, the fee is less than half of that in western states. IVF treatment cost in India varies from place to place. In Bangalore, for example, the average cost of treatment is 1,60,000 to 1,70,000 per cycle, whereas, the ivf cost of treatment in Mumbai, Pune and Kolkata is around 60,000 to 80,000.
