7 Ways To Identify Real Pearl

by 9gem dotcom Manager
There may be several gemstones in the market, but the elegance and panache that pearls exude are hardly found in any other gemstone. These organic gemstones have always been in great demand all over the world. Perhaps, this demand has led to the origin of fake pearls. These imitations may look very much like the natural pearl gemstone, but there are a few differences that may help a layman understand whether the pearls they are looking at is real or not.

Here are a few such differences that can help you differentiate between real and fake pearls without much difficulty.

Sound:

To check whether you have a genuine pearl necklace in hand, you can shake or knock the string. If they are real, then the pearls will create a soft sound. If they are fake pearls, then they may sound thin. You can even check the sound that a pearl creates when you rub it with your tooth. If you hear a sandy kind of sound, then the pearl is a real one.

Touch:

Touching the pearls is another sure shot way to check if they are genuine or not. Take one pearl in each hand and rub them together, if you feel an uneven or odd feel and produce a pearl powder, then they are real. However, if by rubbing them together, you get a smooth feel, then they are fake ones. You can even rub a pearl against your tooth, and if the pearl is real, then it will feel gritty.

Magnifying Glass:

One of the easiest ways to check if a pearl is real or not is to see it with a 5x or 10x magnifying glass. The surface of a real pearl will appear a bit grainy. Whereas, the surface of a fake pearl will appear rough eggshell-like.

Color:

An easy way to understand if the pearls you are planning to buy are genuine or not is to check the color of the pearls. This may not be a foolproof way to check the authenticity of the pearls but is still quite helpful. While there is a huge variety of colors available, when it comes to pearls, you can check if the ones you are setting your eyes on are real by observing them under the light. By looking at them under the light, you will be able to see a unique color overtone. When the pearl’s surface reflects light, it should produce a one-of-its-kind overtone which can be rose in case you are observing white pearls, and green if you are seeing black pearl stone. This overtone goes well beneath the surface of the pearl till its depth.

Shape:

To understand the authenticity of a pearl, take a look at its shape. Real pearls don’t really have a perfect shape. These natural pearls differ in shape and don’t form the perfectly sized sphere when you look at each of them. This is the reason why you should be wary in case you are buying a pearl necklace that has all the same shaped and sized pearls, as they could very well be fake ones.

Temperature:

The temperature of pearls can tell a lot about their authenticity. Touch the pearls, and if they feel cold at first and then change as per your body’s temperature, warming up gradually, then they are real. Fake pearls, if they are made of glass, may feel cold at first but then the lower temperature lasts longer when touched against the skin. And if the fake pearls are made of plastic, then they will feel just like the room temperature.

Luster:

Another way to check if pearls are real or fake is to observe their luster. Real pearls carry a soft and gentle luster that gives them a rich appearance. Fake pearls, on the other hand, exude an unusual and glass-like luster.
