7 perfect ways to develop your speech

by Jaques Montegolifier Chartered Accountant
You may mumble a lot while speaking, or there are times people may take a while to comprehend your message. You can take steps to better them by taking up a speech training or development course. Nowadays, most of the job requires you to give a speech or speak publicly or simply improve your overall speaking patterns. Here is where speech coaching enters the picture.

Speech development programs assist in improving your speech in the following methods:

1)    Stand and move around: You not only feel but also look and sound energetic if you stand and deliver the speech. Even if it is a panel speech or phone or media interview, it is ideal for standing and addressing the speech. Sitting in a place drains the energy, crowds the diaphragm and makes you sound less lively. Plus, practicing your speech walking around, ensures you pull off a smooth presentation.

2)    Speak loudly: The best way to find out if you stumble over a phrase or cannot pronounce something easily unless you practice aloud. In such cases, you can rewrite or workaround the sentences. You also get a sense of how you feel while speaking – does it make you sound tense, too fast, or if you face some other concerns.

3)    Practicing without text: If you intend to speak without any text, then have specific keywords around which you can weave your message. Choose keywords that are vivid and specific. You can list those keywords in a whiteboard which you can glance at and use them as cues. There are times you do not require these cue cards and practice the speech fluently.

4)    Actual setting: It is not imperative to practice in your bedroom or living space. You could check how your speech sounds in a conference room, office, or hotel room. If the venue is open space, then you can practice your speech minutes before you go live. Understand the kind of props that will be used in your speech.

5)    Record yourself: Speech development has a small group of people in front of whom you can record your practice. Use your smartphone camera, upload, and review the video. The checklist includes factors such as gestures, vocals, movement, and tone. You may want to improve two to three factors. Again, record yourself and see your progress.

6)    Listen to the audio recording: Now that you have honed your movements and gestures, time to focus on the central part – the speech. In case you want to memorize your content, record reading the text in a lively manner. Some of the aspects that speech training asks you to emphasize on are pronunciation, pauses, and up or downturns. Load the audio in a CD or your smartphone and hear it out repeatedly. Some do so while working out in a gym. You could bring voice variety by doing so and can familiarize with the words you want to say out.

7)    Work with a coach: These speech development programs involve a professional coach. This way, you can read your development in a better and faster way. Even your delivery issues get resolved. You also work on your checklist way ahead of time.
