7 ways successful leaders communicate with their team

by Jaques Montegolifier Chartered Accountant
One of the characteristics of a successful leader is how well they communicate with the team. At the starting level, communication is all about the exchange of information, be it in the form of brainstorming, delegating responsibilities, and alerting others of a problem. The accuracy, timing, and kind of the message directly affect how efficiently the plan gets carried out. How you communicate the message to the organization will have a direct impact on how they respect you, respect one another, and finally perform the task.

Leadership communication training is available across the world to hone the skills of aspiring leaders. They ask them to follow some principles that not only earns them respect from the team members but also eases the flow of the task. They are:

1)    Mediums: Ensure you are considering the right mode of communication. You should be able to send a mass text or voice message to the employees. Such channels come handy in case of emergencies. Similarly, do not send out long emails to start a conversation, especially if the subject matter is sensitive. Read the situation and decide on the ideal medium. It automatically increases the effectiveness of the message.

2)    Tone and direction: Leadership communication training emphasizes on the tone of the interaction. This comes into focus, especially if you have face to face conversation. Remember what you are trying to accomplish and how you may come across while delivering the message. For instance, if an employee has done a subpar job, you would want to improve their problem to make sure they are not repeated. You do not want the employee to feel guilty about their error. Frame your wording, instead of reprimanding. Use a friendlier tone with the correct direction. You will accomplish more, make your intentions clearer, and preserve morale as well.

3)    Concise: Leaders strive to remain as brief as possible. This mainly is true when you are giving a presentation. Of course, you have presentation skills coaching for the same. Speaking and writing concisely makes sure you convey as much information as possible in the smallest space.

4)    Decisive and focused message: When you write or give a message, it must be decisive or focused. Avoid rambling or work through the problem loudly. Speak when you have something useful to say, and the point should be clear. There are several tools available online to organize your thoughts, tasks and goals, and define your thoughts in a finer framework.

5)    Be proactive: Just telling someone about a new project is not enough, especially if they are already halfway through the work. Be as active as possible, showing your employees early on what you expect from them. Explain your expectations to them before any actions are taken. An easier way to streamline the process is by sending alerts and using calendar apps. This makes you time your messages, especially for following up.

6)    Available for conversation: One of the biggest characteristics of a leader is being available for the teammates round the clock. This is important to build morale within the team. Show patience and appreciation for their thoughts and opinions. They will be willing to be comfortable to share their concerns more frequently.

7)    Listening: Leadership training and presentation skills coaching imparts one lesson, listening actively to every member of your team. Every team member is valuable, and their range of opinions will offer you new ideas and at the same time, help you see the flaws as well as inconsistencies. Do it often and boost the trust within the team.
