6 Simple Habits That Will Make Your Professional Life and Personal Life Better

by Sophia Lee SEO

As a professional, you are constantly juggling many balls. You’re earning an income, working on projects, managing a team, providing for loved ones, and keeping up with all the responsibilities and obligations you have to fulfill. As a business owner, you’re responsible for making sure your employees are happy, that you’re meeting your company’s goals and keeping your customers satisfied. But in this busy world, it’s easy to lose touch with the people in your life, which can be detrimental to your career, your health, and your overall happiness. So, what can you do to make yourself a better professional, a better leader, and a better person?

1. Listen to people.

When we talk about making good first impressions, we typically refer to how we are perceived when we interact with people. But, did you know that the first thing people notice when they see you is your body type? Your physique and face will define your first impression, and more often than not, it’s your body type that people will remember. But, it’s more than just the way you look. Your posture, your mannerisms, and even your facial expression and gestures can all play a role.

2. Embrace haters.

This is one of the things I’m most proud of: I embrace the haters, says 34-year-old New York native and recently retired fashion and entertainment editor, Melissa Chiotti.  It’s gotten to the point where I can literally see them coming. So, I embrace it, I laugh, and say, You know what, I can’t wait to meet you.

3. Follow through with your commitments.

Often, professional success depends on your ability to get things done. With deadlines looming and busy schedules, it can be hard to stick to your commitments. But, as Confucius said, “The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.” Even if you take a small step each day, you’ll be surprised to see how far you’ve come after a few months.

4. Use words of affirmation.

Saying “I love you” to your kids every day is a fantastic way to secure their self-esteem and help them feel loved. This is a habit adults can benefit from just as much. It’s important to tell your loved ones how much you value them, and practicing gratitude is one of the best ways to increase positive thoughts and feelings. Start by writing down three things you are thankful for every day, and keep this journal nearby so you can read it throughout the day.

5. Advocate consistently.

I've talked before about how advocacy is one of the easiest ways to get better at public speaking. It's also one of the ways that I get the most out of my Toastmasters speeches. Many members practice their speeches in front of the club, but those speeches are seldom seen by the people they most want to impress—their colleagues. By setting a goal of delivering speeches to colleagues at work, you can practice your speech skills in front of people you interact with on a daily basis. And if you're already being invited to speak to colleagues at work, this will boost your credibility as an expert in your field.

6. Remember important events.

Whether it's the traditional New Year’s resolution or not, most of us use the beginning of a new year to set some goals and make them happen. However, too few people actually succeed. The most successful people I know don’t set annual resolutions. Instead, they focus on daily, even hourly, things you can do to improve your life. One of the most powerful things you can do is remember important events in your life.
