5 Tips for Effective Pool Maintenance
by Kevin Smith AuthorHaving
a pool is a life-long dream for a lot of people, so it's easy to forget that
owning a pool is not all just lounging and swimming. There is some work
involved in keeping it up, and a lot of responsibility on your shoulders to
keep it in good shape for you, your family, and your friends who are always
dropping by for a quick swim. As you go shopping for pool maintenance supplies
in Atlanta, here are some tips to keep in mind.
1. Skim that Pool
The
most obvious bit of pool maintenance is skimming the pool periodically so you
can remove twigs, leaves, and small bugs from the pool's surface. Remember,
you're not just doing this to keep leaves out of your hair, this is an
important part of keeping the cool in good shape, so it should be done once
ever 2 to 3 days whether you're swimming or not. And be sure to give extra
attention after a storm, or on windy days. Anything left on the surface could clog
up the filter later on.
2. Monitor the Water Level
You
don't want the water level to vary too much. Your installer should tell you the
optimum water level that insures the proper chemical balance and that the pumps
are working properly. If you notice that the pool level drops quickly where you
are, you might want to consider a solar pool cover.
3. Check the Chemical Balance
Routinely
check the pH and chlorine levels so that the chemicals are in balance, and you
have the sparkling pool that is always swim-ready. This is the best way to make
sure it's healthy, and the equipment is working the way it's supposed to. A pH
testing kit can be purchased at your pool supply store, and they're very easy
to use.
4. Clean Pool Tiles on the Water Line
The
edge of the water line is where evaporation interacts with small particles and
bacteria, and can leave unsightly stains. It's worth taking the time to scrub
along the water line, so harmful substances don't build up.
5. Shock Treatment
You
pool should be given a shock treatment every two weeks. A high dose of
chemicals is required so bacteria and algae don't linger, but keep in mind,
this is not a replacement for regularly checking the levels. After shocking,
you should wait several hours for using the pool.
Pools
require a lot of attention. So, purchase all your pool maintenance supplies
in Atlanta, and keep up the regular cleaning schedule, and your
pool can be relied on for countless, relaxing sunny days.
